Join the bartenders at Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill for the fastest happy hour in Ocean City, 5:00 to 6:00 PM every day.
Did you know that you could relax all day long on the beach and enjoy food and beverage service without ever leaving your beach chair? Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill between 37th & 38th Street on Ocean City’s oceanfront makes it possible. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the restaurant is staffed with beach servers who deliver trays of Caribbean inspired food and drinks directly to your beach chair.
Just a few sandy steps over the dune on 37th Street, you’ll find even more Caribbean flavor. Coconut Beach Bar & Grill’s oceanfront patio boasts a crush bar, a full-service bar, a stage, a volleyball area, and a merchandise shop.
We celebrated Sunday Funday at Coconuts this week, and ended up staying until sunset. As we arrived in the early afternoon, “acoustically armed and dangerous” local musician John LaMere was strumming classic rock ‘n’ roll. The crowd was already growing, as happy customers sang along to the live tunes. Three lovely hostesses greeted us at the hostess stand by the T-shirt shop. We selected a corner table on the outdoor patio beneath a shady umbrella. We could see athletic beachgoers starting a game of volleyball. It is such a fun atmosphere.
In true “Sunday Funday” fashion, I started my meal with a specialty crush. I ordered the Champagne Crush. My fiancé, Joey, ordered Coconuts’ award-winning specialty rum punch—the Tipsy Turtle. We were pleased to see a long list of discounted “frozen chillers” and “on the rocks” specialty cocktails, along with beer and wine selections.
For our 12-year-old, Nevaeh, who also is a huge fan of Coconuts, we ordered the Crab Guacamole appetizer. Fresh avocado is mixed with salsa and chunks of blue crabmeat, sprinkled with Old Bay, and served with tri-color tortilla chips. The guacamole is so good that I ate it by the forkful. The appetizers menu features plenty of tempting dishes, such as Wasabi Shrimp & Crab Dip Bites—traditional crab dip with wasabi shrimp and sweet crab, infused with ginger, garlic and cheese.
New on Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill’s menu this year are Mahi Tacos and Calamari Tacos. We had to try them, and we’re so glad that we did. “These tacos are so delicious,” said Nevaeh, as she bit into the soft tortilla shell overstuffed with breaded strips of juicy Mahi, cheddar jack cheese, and fresh mango salsa with huge chunks of sweet pineapple. Shrimp Tacos, Fish Tacos, Steak Tacos, and Chicken Tacos are also available.
Joey ordered the Seared Tuna sandwich. Six ounces of the ocean’s finest tuna is seasoned Key West style and served grilled or blackened on a Kaiser roll. Nevaeh ordered the Crab Cake Sandwich. Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill’s recipe includes a five-ounce Maryland lump crab cake served on a potato roll with lettuce and tomato.
Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill presents a never-ending list of sandwich options, perfect for eating while sunbathing on your beach towel. I recommend the Shrimp Salad Sandwich, which is comprised of chilled shrimp in lemon dill mayo with celery and onion. It tastes great paired with a George’s Bloody Mary. Another mouthwatering sandwich is the Chesapeake Burger—an eight-ounce burger topped with Maryland crab cake, shredded cheddar jack cheese, and Old Bay seasoning on a Kaiser Roll. The Chicken Salad Sandwich is tossed with cranberries and minced onion in a pepper supreme dressing.
Turkey Burger, Grilled Mahi, Chesapeake Chicken, Grilled Teriyaki Chicken, and Yuengling Battered Fried Haddock are just a few more of many sandwiches at Coconuts. If you dare, try the quarter-pound all beef Mega Hot Dog on a potato roll with chili and cheese sauce. King Wraps are also on the menu, including Island-style Jerk Chicken, Pepper Jack Chicken, Buffalo Chicken, and Chicken Caesar Wrap.
Healthy dishes also abound at Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill. Try the Summer Salad for a blend of romaine, iceberg, and greens under a mix of apples, mandarin oranges, candied cranberries, pineapple, sunflower seeds, apple cider vinaigrette, and your choice of chicken or steak. Consisting of three fried green tomatoes, mini crab cakes, cherry tomatoes, onion, garlic, and parsley oil, the Shore Salad is another refreshing recipe. Garden Salad, Classic Caesar, and South West Salad round off the salad selections.
An array of munchies is featured on the appetizers menu, including Onion Rings, Chicken Tenders, Coconut Shrimp, and Jumbo Steamed Gulf Shrimp. We enjoy the Veggie Basket with broccoli tempura bites and fried green beans with chipotle dipping sauce. Mahi Fingers with Sriracha Tequila Lime sauce are a crowd favorite. Jerk Chicken, Buffalo Wings, and Beer Battered Buffalo Shrimp are lip-smacking good. Try the Calamari Fries with Sriracha Tequila Lime or Pineapple Chili Sauce for something different and scrumptious.
A family friendly environment, Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill features a “Little Surfers” menu with Mac ‘n’ Cheese Bites, Mini Pretzel Dogs, Fried Shrimp Basket, and Junior Cheeseburger. A small drink and fries are included with every little surfer meal.
Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill presents the fastest happy hour in Ocean City—power hour from 5:00 to 6:00 PM every day, with two-for-one drink specials. My favorite indulgence is a bucket of “Barefoot Toes,” five mix-and-match mini-bottles of wine on ice.
Summer is in full swing, and Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill showcases local musicians every day. Catch Darin Engh on the outdoor patio stage on Friday, June 27, from noon until 4:00 PM, followed by John LaMere from 5:00 to 9:00. On Saturday, June 28, Kevin Poole and Joe Mama will entertain the daytime crowd. Ginger Duo, Old School, and Nate Clendenen are just a few more locally-renowned musicians on tap for the last week of June.
