de Lazy Lizard
De Lazy Lizard staff is fun and spreading enthusiasm for the new downtown restaurant.
I waited so long for this restaurant to celebrate its grand opening. Ideally situated on the bay next to downtown’s Route 50 Bridge into Ocean City, De Lazy Lizard is the hotspot for waterfront fun. I spent much of the long, cold winter in Ocean City watching the progress of the restaurant’s development, and I was thrilled when it opened its doors in time for summer. I’ve spent many sunsets at De Lazy Lizard, listening to live, acoustic rock and sipping happy hour specials with my friends on the bay. Bring your boat, jet ski, bike, car, or feet to De Lazy Lizard. The property boasts plenty of parking for water and street toys.
You’ll notice many local faces filling the staff at De Lazy Lizard, like bartenders Brad and Stat, and servers Lindsay and Beth Ann. Lindsay was our friendly server when my wonderful friend, Kelly Quinn (Mann Properties), and I enjoyed a sunset dinner on the bayfront. Leo, the gracious manager, led us past picnic tables large enough to seat groups of twenty, toward the best table in the house—an umbrella-covered table on the southwest corner of the sandy, bayfront dining area. Check out the photo I took from our table. With plenty of comfortable seating along the bayfront dock, De Lazy Lizard offers panoramic water views. Of course, indoor seating is also available with magnificent bay views.
Lindsay treated us like gold. We began our meal with one order of Calamari. Served in a basket, lightly breaded calamari rings are tossed in a sweet Thai chili dipping sauce, which makes the appetizer good to the last bite. Kelly ordered a basket of Steamed Clams too, and I tried a bowl of Cream of Crab Soup. Dipping each little neck clam in melted butter, Kelly remarked that Steamed Clams are her favorite summertime food. I’m a huge fan of Cream of Crab Soup, and De Lazy Lizard lived up to my high expectations. Also on the Soup menu at De Lazy Lizard are Maryland Crab and Cream of Crab Cake—cream of crab soup topped with a homemade crab cake.
Other delectable appetizers on the menu at De Lazy Lizard are Crab Balls, Chicken Fingers, and Wings, which may be the largest on the island. Breaded daily, “Baby Arm” mozzarella logs are too big to call “sticks.” Named after the largest lizard, the Godzilla Nachos are a heaping mound of nachos topped with jalapeños, black olives, cheese, onions, salsa, sour cream, and either beef or chicken. Other tempting appetizers are Crab Dip, Steamed Shrimp, and Lazy Waffle Fries—topped with the same zesty ingredients as the Godzilla Nachos.
Ready to serve appetites of all sizes, De Lazy Lizard offers burgers, sandwiches, and entrées. Fish and Chips, Fried Chicken, and Rack O’ Ribs are just a few mouthwatering entrées at the restaurant. Crab Cakes are made with all jumbo lump crabmeat. The Mango Grilled Chicken is comprised of two chicken breasts with mango salsa. Coconut Fried Shrimp are also served with mango dipping sauce. Seafood lovers should try the Tuna, which is a 10-ounce filet, grilled or blackened to perfection. Each entrée is served with a choice of two side items—fries, Cole slaw, applesauce, or mixed vegetables.
From the “Sandwiches and Stuff” menu, Kelly ordered Fish Tacos, and I opted for Shrimp Salad. Prepared in flour tortillas with lettuce and tomato, three fish tacos are a crowd pleaser at De Lazy Lizard. “These are soooo good,” said Kelly. Choosing from a Kaiser roll, wrap, or bed of lettuce, I opted to have my Shrimp Salad served in a wrap. Covered with Old Bay seasoning, De Lazy Lizard’s Shrimp Salad stays true to the Eastern Shore classic. I highly recommend it. Kelly and I both upsized our sandwiches to platter status, which includes chips, pickle, fries, and Cole Slaw. I can’t say no to Sweet Potato Fries, which are tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with honey mustard at De Lazy Lizard. “These are like dessert,” said Kelly as she helped me devour my pile of fries.
Crab Cake, Soft Crab, Hot Dog, and Grilled Chicken are a few more sandwiches on the menu. The Tuna Steak sandwich is grilled or blackened and served with lettuce, tomato, and mango sauce. Chicken Salad is made fresh daily at De Lazy Lizard with chunks of all white meat chicken breasts. The restaurant will certainly be a top contender in next year’s Ocean City Cheesesteak Competition. Its Filet Cheesesteak is loaded with fresh cheese, sautéed onions and peppers, and … filet mignon! Also, try the Crispy Chicken Sandwich in one of four ways: plain, buffalo, club or Parmesan.
For burger lovers, De Lazy Lizard boasts half-pound, juicy burgers. The Todd Burger is topped with crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, and sliced avocado. Yummy. Named after the founder and president of Royal Plus, the Odachowski Burger is a mouthful of juicy burger, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and provolone cheese. Are you a vegetarian? Try the Spicy Black Bean Burger for a delightfully healthy meal.
De Lazy Lizard offers a full children’s menu, including Corn Dog, Grilled Cheese, Mini Pizza, Juice Box, and more. A mechanical surfboard and lizard mascot have entertained crowds of kids on weekends past, and more entertainment is on slate for this summer.
For adults only, drink specials abound at De Lazy Lizard. Try the Creamsicle or Watermelon Crush. Or, do a shot of tequila with the worm and join De Worm Club. Drink specials take place almost every day, and live entertainment is in full effect at De Lazy Lizard for happy hour and sunset. The restaurant’s grand opening party was phenomenal, and the place has been going strong every day since then.
