July 24th and Tues. July 25.

311 have crossed yet another milestone in their 27-year career. The group’s brand new album MOSAIC, released June 23rd via BMG and has debuted at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart which marks the multi-platinum group’s 10th consecutive Top 10 Album on the chart. Of 311’s 10 charting albums, five have debuted at #6 or higher on the chart.

In support of MOSAIC, 311--singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, singer/DJ S.A. Martinez, drummer Chad Sexton, bassist P-Nut and guitarist Tim Mahoney--are currently in the midst of their extensive headlining tour of North America for the 18th summer in a row. Their Unity Tour has become one of the most anticipated concerts of the summer and has included many different supporting acts over the years including Sublime with Rome, The Offspring, Snoop Dogg, Slightly Stoopid, Cypress Hill, The Roots, Matisyahu, Ziggy Marley, and many more.

311 just returned from their 5th sold-out 311 Caribbean Cruise. The 311 Caribbean Cruise has sailed on 5 adventures to date on a four night adventure aboard a luxury Norwegian Cruise Lines ship and sees some 3,000 passionate 311 fans (from all 50 U.S. states & 15 countries), with 311 playing 3 shows along the way. In 2016, the group launched 311 Amber Ale in conjunction with Rock Brothers Brewing, Cigar City Brewing & Nebraska Brewing. 311 also launched their Grassroots Uplifter brand vape pen. For more info please visit: 311.com.

This years 2017 Unity Tour features special guests New Politics, whom, as my readers should know by now, I absolutely adore. Can’t wait to see them again and getting to open for 311 is just amazing! I have been a 311 fan for a long time with songs like “Down”, “Amber” and “Beautiful Disaster” being a part of my high school playlist. It is going to be a true honor to see them perform all of their hits live!

As for New Politics, they have had a few new things brewing since my last report. They released a new summer single, “One of Us,” along with a great video that pays homage to some of their all time favorite videos. And they say they are working on a new album, which will be their fourth, but no release date as of yet.

Their biggest hit single to date, “Harlem”, appeared on their second studio album, A Bad Girl in Harlem, which released in 2013. We discovered them right here on the beach in Ocean City, MD when they played Dew Tour, 2013 and have been huge fans ever since. For more info please check them out @ newpolitics.dk

Anyway, I cant wait for another great show and hope to come back with tons of great photos to share with you all! But for all of you more adventurous types, live music lovers and for all the Bad Girls who want to shake it with New Politics and 311, get your tickets now @ livenation.com. Are you "Down"? See you there!

16561489781676 Dreamers http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/Dreamers-     I am super excited to introduce our readers to a brand spanking new indie pop band called Dreamers. The three piece originally formed in Brooklyn but have now made their way out to LA and they have been having one very busy, incredible and important year. They toured all last summer opening for bands such as Great Good Fine OK, The Mowglis and Walk the Moon and have made appearances at several festivals such as Lollapalooza, despite the fact that they had only released one short, four-song EP in 2014, simply titled E.P.

Their debut album, This Album Does Not Exist, was released on Aug. 26, 2016, and features their hit single “Sweet Disaster.” The single was released earlier in June and has been climbing the alternative charts all year. It peaked at number four on AltNations Top 18, was at number 16 on iTunes Alternative charts and reached number 19 on Billboards Alternative chart. The song has a very catchy beat and grungy ‘90s guitar hooks all blended together perfectly with an array of modern synthy sounds.
Trust me, it’s good and so is the rest of the album for that matter! I really like the message in their song “Never Too Late to Dance,” reminding us all that it’s never too late for anything in this life, including happiness! The album has an overall positive and happy vibe to it that just makes you want to smile. And, to top things off, they are currently on The Low Lives Tour with one of my current favorite bands, The Griswolds. Unfortunately, I missed my opportunity to review their show; however, I was able to ask them a few questions via email...

Question: How are you enjoying your success this year? Has there been any time for you to really celebrate? And if so, how have you celebrated?

Dreamers: We don't take days off, but we get plenty of time for small celebrations along the way.  For instance, last night on tour we cooked a massive spaghetti dinner in our hotel and drank wine.  It feels like a constant celebration where we work hard at the same time. There's nothing like it.

Q: I was excited to see you on this year’s Firefly Festival Line-up; are you scheduled for any more big Festivals this summer?

D: We’re so excited for the opportunity to play at that festival with all those great artists and bands.  We will be at many more festivals this year, Free Press, Bottle Rock, Bunbury to name a few. Others will be announced soon.

Q: What’s the biggest festival you have played? And which has been your favorite so far?

D: The largest we’ve played was Lollapalooza, which was amazing. It's hard to pick favorites ‘cause we've had so many good times. But mine might have been Big Guava Fest in Tampa. It was one of our first big festival plays back in 2015. We shared a stage with The Pixies, watched The Strokes, and there was a carnival with rides in the festival. I rode the gravitron!

Q: Do you remember how old you were when you really became interested in music? In general and as a career?

D: I was apparently into music since I was born, and as a baby I wanted to play saxophone. I never thought I’d do it as a career till I was about 18-20. I did a lot of soul searching during that period and decided I was gonna make the leap and that I was gonna succeed.

Q: When did you write your very first song and what prompted that?

D: I think I wrote my first real rock song around then, age 20 or 21.  It was after I had thought every possible life path through and realized that being in a rock band was the best one for many reasons.

Q: Do you remember the first album you ever bought?

D: I think mine was Weird Al In 3D. (I also love this album and love that it was your answer. Weird Al is greatly underappreciated but he is a lyrical genius.)

Q: Who would you say has been your biggest influence / inspiration?

D: I could say John Lennon, or maybe Kurt Cobain.  I think a lot of people in my field would say the same thing.

Q: Who’s on your current top playlist?

D: The Griswolds, Zella Day, Tame Impala, Oasis.

Q: Were there ever times any of you felt like giving up? If so, how did you overcome it? And, do you have any advice for new musicians out there?

D: There definitely have been times when I felt like there was no way I could make this happen, that it was an insurmountable challenge or endless road. But I had made such a firm and thought-out decision from the beginning that I was gonna see it through, and I think my stubbornness keeps me going. I think you have to understand that achieving something big is an endless road, a lifetime of hard work, and if you aren’t into that you should do something else.

Q: Anything new in the works you would like us to announce?

D: Check out the video we just filmed for our song “Sweet Disaster.” It was a ridiculously fun experience to make. Also check out our tour schedule; endless big and exciting shows are being planned for us.

Q: Are there any other shows planned in or around our area? (Eastern Shore, DC, Baltimore, Philly)

D: Stay tuned. We'll be touring non-stop throughout the year and there are some secret things in the works. Thanks!

Hopefully, I will be able to catch these guys next time around, but in the meantime, be sure to check them out this summer at the Firefly Music Festival, stream them online @ Spotify, Soundcloud etc... and for more info, please visit their website @ https://www.dreamersuniverse.com/.

16541487448151 Dead Leaf Echo at Philly's Ortleib's Lounge http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/Dead-Leaf-Echo-at-Phillys-Ortleibs-Lounge
Hello Coco fans! Hope everyone has been staying warm with lots of great music! I certainly have been trying to and am finally ready to share one of my last adventures with you all! On December 3rd I headed up to Philly, city that I love, in search of a little dive bar called Ortleib’s Lounge. My mission, to check out a shoegaze band, Dead Leaf Echo, fronted by a fellow Stephen Decatur grad!

He is officially listed on their facebook page simply as Lg: Guitar, Vox, Keys; however, I know him as Lloyd Galyon  (AKA Pancho). Pancho was the goofy kid who sat next to me in Spanish class and kept us all entertained, making us laugh in between congregating verbs and learning how to ask to use the bathroom in Spanish, “Pueblo ir al baño?” (the only way we were allowed to go)!

So, since I grew up and became a concert photo journalist and Lloyd Galyon grew up and became a rock star, I felt obligated to go check out his band and see what he has been up to! Other members of Dead Leaf Echo are Ana B.: Guitar, Vox, Keys; Kevin K.: Drums; and Steve S.: Bass. It was truly a pleasure to meet them all and see them perform.

I arrived at Ortleib’s Lounge just a little before the band, so I had just a few minutes  to take it all in before people really started showing up. Ortleib’s is rich in local history and has its own unique and colorful story which I read about here @ http://hiddencityphila.org/2013/11/brewhouse-jazzhaus-ortliebs-lives-on/ before my visit. I was told it was small and, man, they were not kidding!

There was a lot of demolition and rebuilding going on all around the block but tucked in between scaffolding rafters and safety fences I finally found a small brick building with its famous red “O” above the window. There was a tiny side door, which reminded me of the small dutch houses we would tour on school field trips, that led into the front of the house. This consisted of four, maybe five, tables and a small bar that was only long enough to seat about a dozen. I very quickly found the restrooms, which were located just in front of a set of large, very old looking wooden doors; and there it was, I had found the venue! Just beyond those wooden doors, the space opened up to a fairly large space with a sound booth in the back near the large doors and a small, but adequate, stage on the far end.

Originally, a total of four bands were scheduled to perform, however, the headlining act, False Tracks, had to cancel, which left Dead Leaf Echo as the new headliner. The first band up was an indie psychedelia, garage, punk, basement, fuzz group called Secret Nudist Friends. They were full of fun, raw energy and I really enjoyed their set!

They are a bit on the harder side for psychedelia; therefore, I’m going to call them a psychedelia punk rock bank! Their whole performance was reminiscent of Television or The Ramones and felt very CBGB’s worthy. I really enjoyed their song “No One at the Mall,” which has a Ramones kinda of sound, with a catchy bass line and a silly, fun, chanty chorus that is just stuck in my head. I also liked the catchy sounds of “Something On Your Mind.”

You can find some of their music on Spotify; however, I had a chance to speak with them after their set and they indicated that their roster has changed a lot since the recordings on Spotify but they did play a lot of the same songs. Their current line-up is Maddy on guitar and lead vocals, Andy on bass and Brian provided drums, backing vocals and even sang lead on a couple songs.

It was very nice getting to chat with them and hope our paths cross again one day. I would highly recommend them for a fun night out! For more info please check them out on their Facebook and @ secretnudistfriends.bandcamp.com.

Aster More was up next. They had a little trouble fitting all six members onto this small stage, but eventually figured it out and played a pretty good set. I was not at all familiar with their music and can only say that it was very experimental. They reminded me a bit of Sonic Youth with their screeching guitars and melodic vocals. They seemed to have a rather large, local following as their fans filled the space almost as awkwardly as the band filled the stage. You can find them on facebook and preview and buy their music @ astermore.bandcamp.com.

Dead Leaf Echo had their way with us next. They took a little bit of time setting up their endless panels of effects pedals but they were well worth the wait. They played an incredible set and sounded better than any recording I’ve heard so far. Their swirling guitar sounds were perfectly woven through and in between their dreamy, constantly echoing vocals. Lg and Ana B. were very in sync with each other and their vocals harmonized very nicely. You got the sense that they are very in tune with each other and have a really good dynamic on stage.

Dead Leaf Echo has been making a name for themselves as a Brooklyn based shoegaze band. They have played over 160 shows nationally in just the last two years including SXSW (South by Southwest Conference & Festivals in Austin, Tex.), CMJ, NXNE, Northside Festival, Desert Stars Festival, Kalamazshoegazer Festival in Kalamazoo, Mich., and many, many more.

Shoegaze is a very literal genre of music which really describes the way these bands use such heavy effects pedals that they appear to be gazing at their shoes, when in fact, they are really just concentrating on which pedal to hit next. I would also have to label them as dreampop and/or darkwave because of their poppy, dreamy, yet sometimes dark and mysterious lyrics.

Their debut LP, Thought and Language, was released in 2013 and was mixed by John Fryer (Lush, NIN, Depeche Mode). In 2014 they released an EP entitled true.deep.sleeper and in 2015 they gave us the “Lemonheart” 7” single, which also has a cute little video available on YouTube.

“Lemonheart” is definitely one of the first songs I gravitated to and I was very excited to see them perform it live. They also performed their most recent single “I Will Do (Anything)”, which the group released on Nov. 4th as part of a collaborative project with another group called Did You Die. The single is one side of a split-cassette with a song by Did You Die featured on the other side. The single will also appear on their next album, which they hope to release later this year. I really loved this song and have posted a short video for you all to check out on our Instagram!

All in all, it was a very good night! I had a great time catching up with Pancho and discovering some cool new tunes for you all! If you too would like to hear a Decatur alumni, please check out Dead Leaf Echo @ http://www.deadleafechonyc.com and you can stream now on Soundcloud, Spotify and more.

16511482006764 Grouplove - Big Mess Tour 2016 http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/Grouplove-Big-Mess-Tour-2016     Hello Coco fans! For all the neurotic planning that goes into my adventures, things don’t always work out the way I want. I missed out on the last few shows I had talked about but no worries, I finally made it to one and it was certainly worth the wait!

November 1st, I finally had the opportunity to officially photograph and review GROUPLOVE at The Fillmore in Philadelphia. They are currently on tour in support of their third album, Big Mess, which just released September 9, 2016. This indie-alt-rock band has come a long way since I first saw them perform at the very first Firefly back in 2012. Everyone there walked away saying “those guys were awesome, they will definitely be ones to watch” and so I have! I went home, promptly purchased their debut album, Never Trust a Happy Song, and became a GROUPLOVE addict. I have been trying to review a show ever since and this time, it finally all came together!

After a day of walking around the city of brotherly love, I finally arrived at The Fillmore just in time to catch the last few songs of the opening band, Dilly Dally. They are a Canadian indie, alt, rock band that had a look and sound reminiscent of mid ‘90s experimental post-punk bands such as Sonic Youth and The Pixies. Their music was much heavier than I expected but in a good, raw, punk rock way.

MUNA was up next, and they were great! I still don’t know too much about them except that they are from LA, they have a few songs available on Spotify and they play lovely, synthy, dark pop music. They sound a lot like CHVRCHES but definitely have a darker heavier sound. I liked them a lot and will be on the lookout for their debut album, About U, which is set to release February 3, 2017.

GROUPLOVE fans seemed to come out of nowhere and had the room packed long before the band finally hit the stage. They opened with “I’m With You,” which I thought was a brilliant way to get the crowd’s attention as we all settled in for the night. The song has a melodically long intro, which continues to  build into fun, chant-along lyrics and then ends with ramped-up vocals, screaming guitars and an incredible light show. What a way to kick things off!

Lead singers Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi, were adorable with matching fluorescent hair colors, one greenish blue, the other a reddish orange! They have a style truly their own and I for one loved their looks for the night! Zucconi had on his favorite dress, which he is also pictured wearing in the cover jacket for Big Mess, a beanie cap, ripped jeans and classic black converse! Hooper had a bright red bomber jacket that matched her hair perfectly. By the second song, “Good Mourning,” she ditched the jacket to reveal a black, lacey leotard and she was looking fierce!

There was an overwhelming response to their #1 hit, “Tongue Tied,” which did reach #1 on the alt rock charts and #3 on the US rock chart. The song has been certified platinum and the crowd sang it out so loudly that the band was clearly touched by the out pour of love for this song. In the midst of such hard times for our country, it is really nice to hear such inspiring music. Almost every song on the new album has a pretty clear message of hope and love and it was nice to see them humbled by their fans response! They are a band born out of love, after all.

Their story goes a little like this: girl meets boy and invites him on a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime adventure that eventually leads to the forming of an awesome inde rock band; and they have been touring, writing music and falling more and more in love ever since! They even recently celebrated their daughter Willow’s first birthday, who is also already on her first world tour! (with them of course).

Part of their adventure included meeting drummer Ryan Rabin, who also self-produced the first official self-titled EP, which appeared on January 25, 2011. Rabbin was no stranger to the music business being the son of famous, talented musician Trevor Rabin, who is the former guitarist of ‘80s rock band Yes. After leaving Yes, Rabin (Trevor) became a film composer and has scored more than 40 feature films, winning numerous awards.

So, I can see where Rabin (Ryan) gets it! Producing amazing sounds is just in his blood and he has some interesting fashion choices of his own as well. He has become known for performing in either full bodied pajama suits or long johns with no shoes and crazy socks. He seems to have a large collection of said crazy socks, for I have never seen him wear the same pair twice. For this evening’s performance he came out wearing a T-Shirt w/ long johns pants and crazy socks, of course. Not sure when the shirt came off but bravo! He also showed off his black-light-friendly, light-up drum set during an amazing drum solo.     Rabin and guitarist Andrew Wessen both grew up in LA and seem to have a pretty tight rapport. Rabin ended his drum solo and went straight into introducing Wessen to take the lead vocals on “Cannonball,’ and, of course, they both did an amazing job! I knew Wessen has recorded more vocals but this was the first time I had seen him take the lead at a show and I was super excited about it!

Original bassist Sean Gadd, a songwriter and guitarist from London, recorded the first two albums with them; however, in 2013, he left the band and was replaced by Daniel Gleason. Gleason began touring with them right away and seems to be the perfect fit. He has also now recorded with them for latest album Big Mess.

Anyway, that’s the abridged version as I see it but now back to the show. They did three of my favorite songs from Spreading Rumours right in a row, “Shark Attack,” “Hippy Hill” and “Borderlines and Aliens”. They also threw in an excellent cover of Beastie Boys’s “Sabotage,” which seems to have become a favorite cover for many bands; however, this version included Hooper rapping which I thought was fantastic and exactly on point!

They pretended to end the show abruptly with their newest hit single, “Welcome To Your Life,” which has been climbing the alt rock charts. They quickly exited the stage at the end of the song but nobody moved. The crowd was frozen and all began chanting “Grouplove and 1 more song.”

After a very brief intermission, Zucconi came meandering back out with an acoustic guitar. He proceeded to play an amazing solo, acoustic version of “Enlighten Me,” a very quiet and heartfelt performance that felt very intimate as he encouraged the crowd to sing along. As the song came near its end, I could feel the intensity in his performance building and noticed the rest of the band getting back into position, and to my delight, they blasted into the full version for the end of the performance and what turned out to be just the beginning of an incredibly long four-and-a-half song encore!

They continued with “Beans on Pizza,” which was a bonus track on the deluxe version of Spreading Rumours. By half a song, I was referring to a little diddy they performed for the ending credits theme song to the Netflix original adult animated series, BoJack Horseman. The song is titled “Back in the 90s (BoJack’s Theme)” and is about 40 seconds long; however, they seemed to have gained a side following of fans just because of this series and they even had the Horseman heads to wear while performing!
“Ways to Go” and “Colours” officially ended the show, but I wanted more and so I went in search of the bus to see if I could get a chance to say hi! I waited for about and hour but mission accomplished and they were all so very nice!

I urge everyone to check out GROUPLOVE and go see them live. They are amazing to watch, and please remember to always let love guide your way, you never know what adventure may lie ahead for you!

Oh yeah, and by the way, Radio 104.5 was there to host the event and they have just announced that GROUPLOVE is the headlining act for this year’s Winter Jam, Sunday, January 15th. This year’s line-up also includes River Run North, LP, Judah & the Lion, Capital Cities and Phantogram. For more info please visit: http://www.radio1045.iheart.com

16371474000769 Radio 104.5 Block Party http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/Radio-1045-Block-Party     I am currently sitting on the edge of my seat, getting super excited about some upcoming events that I will be attending, however, I am quickly reminded of the fact that I still have so many other shows to share with you before seeing more! I just can’t help myself, though, and I am ready for more; so I will be attending two more great shows this weekend! The first will be right here in downtown OC at Delmarva Bike Week and then, to make my weekend even better, I get to go to Radio 104.5s’ last Block Party of the summer! I am simply giddy with excitement to see The Griswolds again and I am very excited for headliners Chvrchs as well. Iration and Miike Snow are also on the bill for Sun. Sept 18th and I just can’t wait! However, before I can allow myself to have anymore fun, I have to tell you about one more show, so why not Radio 104.5s’ first Block Party of 2016!

Radio 104.5 is Philadelphia’s alternative rock station, an affiliate of iHeart radio and now my favorite station on the east coast. Together, they have been hosting some of the best alt-rock shows all over Philly including their free Summer Block Party shows once a month all summer long. I first discovered the station about three years ago and not even through music at first. My love of photography and of the band New Politics led me to a series of photos taken by a Stephen Eckert. They were of a Radio 104.5 Winter Jam show that featured New Politics and Twenty One Pilots and it snowed! These photos of the boys were so beautiful with all the snow coming down around them and the show looked so fun I just had to find out more. Turns out Mr. Eckert shoots a lot of shows for Radio 104.5, which led me to their web page. Then, I discovered that this was a free show and I quickly became addicted to the station! You just can’t beat free shows and the best part is that they play all the best alternative rock music. They rarely repeat songs and play a wide variety throughout the day. From early ‘90s hits, to the newest releases, their selections are always different and they have been bringing some of the best groups to showcase at their free shows! I have been to several now and hope to share them all with you eventually, but for now I would like to start with...

May 1st, ’16, Radio 104.5 brought another one of my current favorite new bands, X Ambassadors, to their first Summer Block Party as their main headliner! I had to go, of course, and I am so glad that I did! The show was really a lot of fun. The X Ambassadors were amazing, as always, and I was had a chance to check out another brand new, up-and-coming band called Nothing But Thieves. Unfortunately, I did miss the earlier acts: Modern Colour, Run River North and Kaleo. The sky decided to pour down rain that afternoon, which made my travel a bit slow going and when I finally made it into the city, I decided to hang out at Dave & Buster’s for a bit to stay dry, refuel and recharge before heading into the show! Dave &  Buster’s is located on the top floor of a parking garage that is about a block away from the venue. The Festival Pier is really more of a large lot that is located right off of Columbus Blvd. which runs adjacent to the Delaware River. With water views, plenty of food vendors, games and more, this venue is a really nice spot for outdoor summer shows!

The rain finally did let up for a while, so I headed into the show just as Kaleo finished their set. I really did want to see them and thought I’d have another chance at this year’s Firefly. Sadly, they ended up having to cancel at Firefly and I have still not seen a full performance (Sad Face!) but I am still very intrigued. Their song “Way Down We Go” is currently getting a lot of radio play and has a very catchy beat. The group is from Iceland and has a blues-jazz, folk-rock sound that is really starting to create a buzz. A/B, their first full-length album, was released by Atlantic Records on June 10, ‘16, so back in May, at the time of this show, it was not even out yet but the buzz had already begun. Wish I could have seen more but maybe one day and in the meantime, I can always listen to them on Spotify!

It remained misting and wet for most of the day and it started getting a little heavier as Nothing But Thieves took the stage. Now that I was in, though, I couldn’t let the weather stop me. I got out my ridiculous looking rain poncho and got in position to grab some really great pics. These kids were awesome live; super energetic and very fun to watch! I had heard their song “Tripwire” a couple of times on the radio (104.5 of course) and it certainly caught my attention but I didn’t know much else about them yet. After seeing their performance, I have been converted into a true fan!

Nothing But Thieves formed in Essex, London, and were quickly signed to RCA Records by 2014. Vocalists Conor Mason belted outeach note with heart felt power that radiated throughout the crowd. Guitarist Joe Langrigde-Brown was very engaging and funny; rocking out behind a huge, beautiful, classic body, Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet guitar, he looked like he was truly having a great time! Swaying to the music while flipping his blonde hair around, he made faces and pointed at the crowd, almost as though he were in conversation with them yet never missed a note! Other band members, guitarist, keyboardist Dominic Craik, bassist Philip Blake, and drummer James Price, all had big smiles as their set continued. About halfway through their set, lead singer Mason strapped on a beautiful Fender acoustic guitar and joined in playing for several songs. This included an incredible cover of the Pixies “Where is my Mind,” which has always been a song dear to my heart. Overall, their show was great and I would highly recommend checking them out! They will be playing at The Foundry in Philly with The Wrecks and Civil Twilight on Oct. 21st and I am really hoping to attend! I would really love to see them live again! For more info on Nothing But Thieves, please check out their website @ http://www.nbthieves.com/

Next up were headliners X Ambassadors and I just absolutely adore these guys! They first popped up on my radar back in 2013 when they played one of the little side stages at Firefly. I have since seen them live five times now and would jump at any chance to see them again! I got to do a lil’ interview with them at Firefly 2014, which can be found on our website @ http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/Firefly-2015-Thursday-part-1 and I got to shoot them on their first headlining tour. The VHS Tour was an incredible show and you can read all about that one and tons more on X Ambassadors @ http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/X-Ambassadors-VHS-tour-w-Skylar-Grey-and-Kevin-Garrett.

I hate to repeat stuff that I have already said before but these guys are so much fun I just had to see them again! Brothers Sam and Casey Harris truly seem to be enjoying the success of their debut album, VHS. They also happen to share an adorable, award-winning smile that is just infatuating. Sam has taken on the role of lead singer while Casey, who just so happens to be blind, has always been most comfortable behind his keyboard. Their guitarist, Noah Feldshuh is also their childhood friend from the little town of Ithaca, N.Y., and these three have been working on writing and performing music since they were kids. They met drummer Adam Levin while at college and their group was finally complete. Again, I hate to repeat too much so if you want to know everything, you will just have to read my last review but as for this show, they were amazing as always!

The mist and rain finally cleared up and many people jumped into action to get the stage dried off for Casey to way safely over to his keyboards. Once in position, the band wasted no time and almost immediately began performing their opening songs. Their whole set was incredible as always and I’d like to thank Radio 104.5 one more time for bringing them to Philly and for approving me to shoot this show! It was an amazing experience that I am so happy to finally be sharing with all of my readers. For more info on this amazing band please visit: http://www.xambassadors.com. For more info on Radio 104.5 or to stream from any of your digital devices please visit: http://radio1045.iheart.com/. Can’t wait to share even more Radio 104.5 shows with you all real soon, promise!

16321473396153 The Wilderness Politics Tour http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/The-Wilderness-Politics-Tour     Hello to all of our Coco readers!! Hope you all have had a rockin’ great year, know I sure have! I have been keeping myself very busy, checking out new venues and discovering more great new music to share with you all! I got so busy, in fact, that I also must admit that I have fallen behind on writing my reviews of all these incredible opportunities but I hope to begin sharing them all with you now. I have an incredible stockpile of photos from shows to share with you all, including my coverage of this year’s Firefly Music Festival.
So, without any further delay, and in no particular order, here we go with the first show I would like to share with you all… backing all the way up to November 23, 2015. I had the pleasure to attend The Wilderness Politics tour at the newly renovated Fillmore in Philadelphia. Four different incredible acts performed: LOLO, The Griswolds, New Politics and Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness, and they all gave amazing performances!
The Fillmore Philadelphia is located in what is known as the Fishtown district and its renovation was just one of the many projects scheduled to help revitalize the neighborhood. From the outside, it seemed like a rather small building and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Inside, however, it was a never-ending maze of rooms, each doorway leading to another. The first room was really more of a lobby entrance area where everyone was cleared by security before entering. This area led to a much larger room equipped with a bar area, merchandise booths, and for this particular event, there was even a booth to get your DNA swabbed to become a bone marrow donor. You may think this sounds like an odd thing to have at a rock concert, however, lead singer of headlining act Andrew McMahon is a bone cancer survivor due to a bone marrow transplant he received from a donor. His gratitude has inspired him to become an advocate for the cause, helping to raise awareness. To help get more donors registered to The Be The Match Registry® donor database, DKMS (an international non-profit organization organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and other blood disorders) had booths set up at every stop on this tour. I was told that they had swabbed 127 people so far and had already helped match three people. For more info or to become a donor please visit: deletebloodcancer.org. Saving lives is awesome; thank you Mr. McMahon!!! His story is truly inspiring and I have become a huge fan of not only his music but of him as a person and, of course, I had to get swabbed for the cause! It was very simple and took about one minute.
After leaving this area, there were two large doorways that divided the crowd, one for over 21 and one for the under 21. These doors led to another smaller room with another full-length bar that was roped off for the under 21. On either side of this room, large monitors hung displaying the stage, adding to my excitement and anticipation. There were stairs on either side that led to a balcony viewing area and I later learned there were even more rooms upstairs including a completely separate live music venue known as the Foundry.
The Foundry is fully equipped with its own bar and stage and, with a capacity of 450, I hear it is a great space for more intimate, personal shows. Somewhere up there, there was also a VIP lounge they call the Circle Bar and another event space referred to as Ajax Hall. So in a nut-shell, The Fillmore in Philly is really huge inside with a lot to offer for almost any occasion. It was also a very easy drive from here in Ocean City, Md., easy to find and very easy to park for free!
Time now for me to get back on track and onto the actual show. Back down the stairs and through another set of doors was the main stage area, which has a capacity of 2,500. LOLO was first to take the stage and she came out wrapped in a huge, full-length fur coat and Griswold beanie cap. She has a very soulful, jazzy sound that is delivered with a New York punk rock punch! This girl really has a set of pipes and her lyrics truly cut deep in a very thought provoking, witty way. A few songs into her set, she shed the fur and was then dressed in full black attire, black T-shirt and black skinny jeans, in true New York punk fashion. She delivered each song with incredible depth and emotion and I truly enjoyed watching her perform!
Lauren Pritchard, aka LOLO, is a fairly new, up-and-coming solo artist who has had her sights set on fame since the early age of sixteen. Born in Jackson, Tennessee, she has since relocated many times in pursuit of a career in music and film. She received her first big break when she landed a role on the hit Broadway show Spring Awakening, in which she performed for two years, before relocating again to the UK and signing a record deal with Universal Island Records. Wasted in Jackson, recorded under her birth name, was her first full-length album released in 2010. Eventually, Pritchard ended up back in New York, where she signed with DCD2 Records and released her first EP, Comeback Queen, under the name LOLO.
Formerly known as Decaydance Records, DCD2 is an independent record label, partially owned by Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy. In 2014, the label relaunched as DCD2 Records and the first new acts they signed were New Politics and LOLO, which I am sure had something to do with them touring together. LOLO is also responsible for the original version of the hit song “Miss Jackson!,” made famous now by her label mates Panic! At the Disco. Pritchard also composed and wrote a raved about, off-Broadway musical entitled Songbird - a Tennessee Fiction, which ran in the fall of 2015. In loving memory of When I Gave a S#*t!, which is so perfectly titled in my opinion, is set to release on Sept. 9th and will be her first full length album recorded under her new name. A handful of singles have already released which you can stream on just about any platform: spotify, apple, google music etc.
If you haven’t heard of her yet, I highly suggest checking out the single “Hit and Run,” or watch her latest video for her new single “Heard it From a Friend” (insert explicit lyrics warning here)! I am sure we will be seeing a lot more from this girl; in fact, you could even catch her at the World Café Live in Philly, Sept. 14. For more info on LOLO please visit lolomusic.com.
The Griswolds were out next and these guys are just a ridiculous, silly amount of fun. I first saw them perform at last year’s Firefly 2015 to a ridiculously over-sized crowd, who seemed to really embrace their music. They are from Sydney, Australia, and play a blend of catchy, modern, pop songs that really stick in your head. Their shared love of American pop culture, everything from music to movies, actually led them to their chosen band name, taken from the beloved National Lampoon’s famous family ‘The Griswolds’. These guys are always smiling and always seem to be having the time of their lives.
Lead singer Chris Whitehall came onto the stage wearing his own version of a New Politics T, sleeves cut off and modified to read “B@#*% I’m Old” instead of …Gold, which I thought was just perfectly silly! Their performance was filled with fun and laughs and every song was upbeat and very danceable! I loved watching them all jump and bounce around on stage, while performing songs from their first full-length album Be Impressive, which was released by Wind-Up Records in 2014. Near the end of their set, they asked if we were ready for the next band, New Politics, and the crowd went wild. Chris asked, “do you want them to come say hi and, of course, the crowd screamed for them wildly and we were met with a wonderfully silly surprise.
The boys from New Politics all came running out wearing nothing but bath towels, as though they were interrupted from their pre-show showers. They even had soaps on a rope and scrubby poofs that they tossed out to fans. Many girls began to swoon and I have to admit I was one of them; but sadly, they held on to those towels tight and disappeared backstage without incident! The Griswolds played a few more songs to wrap up their set which, over-all, was really a very fun time. I feel as though they truly engage with their audience; Chris even came out to say hi to fans on the front rail and he even posed for many fan pics.
My favorite Danish boys performed next, New Politics, whom I am just completely in love with. I have been mesmerized by these guys ever since the first time I saw them and have to admit I have become a bit obsessive. My love affair with New Politics began right here in Ocean City, Md., when they performed on the beach for Dew Tour in 2013.  These guys were so much fun to watch that I have not been able to stop! I have been to many shows since, including one stop on their first headlining tour, “Harlem, U.S.A.” and I even had the honor of doing a quick interview with them at Firefly 2014.
Lead vocalist David Boyd and guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, etc., Søren Hansen are originally from Copenhagen, Denmark, and are two of the nicest, sweetest, most talented guys I ever met. They now live in Brooklyn, New York, along with band mate and drummer Louis Vecchio, a Long Island native. Their first big hit single “Harlem” was released in 2013 on their second album, A Bad Girl in Harlem, which has a very catchy beat that is just simply fun to sing and dance along to! Vikings is their third studio album which released August 14, 2015, and I couldn’t wait to see them perform some of their newest songs live.
When the show began, I was lucky enough to be in the media pit and Boyd wasted no time busting out into his infamous, break dancing moves, right in front of me! I was so close while he was spinning on his head, that I couldn’t even fit him completely in frame! It was truly incredible and so much fun to get to shoot these guys again! I only got to stay up there for the first three songs, per industry standard, but it was well worth every minute! I was very glad to hear them include some of their early songs such as “Just like Me” and “Yeah Yeah Yeah.” That first self-titled album definitely had more of a raw, punk-rock sound and I for one just love all of it! Their music has now matured into a blend of many genres that has been refined into their own new sound.
I was elated to hear one of my absolute favorites, “Overcome,” which I think is a very inspirational and lovely anthem stating quite simply… “if we unite as one then anything is possible!” Loved hearing new songs “15 Dreams” and “Stardust.” Hansen recorded more vocals on the latest album than he ever had before and for his song “Stardust,” he came out by himself, sat at a piano and performed a stripped down solo version. The place was almost pitch black with just him slightly illuminated at a piano; then little lights began to twinkle from all over, including from the crowd. It was really a beautiful and heartfelt performance that I felt created a very special moment! Every minute of their shows are electrifying and I really hope you all check them out and see for yourselves! For more information see their official website @ http://newpoliticsrock.com/
After quickly catching my breath, I headed out of the main stage area in search of The Griswolds! I would like to take this moment to say a big huge ‘Thank You’ to Danny for trying so hard to help me get an interview with the band. It all proved to be a bit more hectic than I had hoped, so sorry for all of that and again, a sincere Thank You!
Anyway, I did manage to catch vocalist Chris Whitehall and got to ask just a few questions while he was hanging out in the club area.

Q: Anything new in the works?

A: Not yet but we are working on it!

Q: If you were a member of The Griswolds family, who would you be? Which family member are you most like?

A: Clark, of course.

Q: How did the tour in Australia go with Passion Pitt? (another band that I adore)

A: Unfortunately that was cancelled but we did get to enjoy some time at home!

I did manage to get backstage after their show for just a quick minute but before I had a chance to say much, Andrew McMahon was calling all performers back on to the stage and, sadly, we never had the chance to meet back up. Other band members include bassist Tim John (who just celebrated a birthday, Happy B-day Tim), guitarist Daniel Duque-Perez, and drummer Lachlan West (aka Lucky). They were all very sweet for the brief moment I got to meet them. They all seem to be very genuine, very funny, very sweet guys! Oh, and did I mention they’re all pretty darn cute too?!
The Griswolds have now released a new single, “Out of My Head,” that has had me hooked from the first note. Their sound has become so sharp and refined and I for one feel that they are maturing very nicely into their rightful positions as writers of great music! I can’t wait for the release of their new album, which will hopefully be announced soon. I am also very excited to see that they were added to the line-up for Radio 104.5’s last Summer Block Party of the season along with Iration, Miike Snow and CHVRCHES. Visit radio1045.iheart.com for more info. It is coming up really fast:  Sun., Sept. 18, at the Festival Pier and I just can’t wait to see the boys in action again! For more information see their official website: http://blog.wearethegriswolds.com/splash
Because of all the running around that I did trying to get pictures and interviews, I missed most of the Andrew McMahon & the Wilderness show, but did get to hear one of his hits “Cecilia and the Satellite.” I wasn’t that familiar with his music at the time, but have since grown to really like it. I have since had another opportunity to see him live so I will save his story for another article which I hope to get to you soon.

15291449591656 CJ Ramone @ Fagers Island http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/CJ-Ramone-Fagers-Island     I’ve been so busy lately that I have to admit I am behind on publishing my reviews; but I have some fantastic shows to tell you about, the first of which is for punk rock legend CJ Ramone. He was preparing for a quick, European tour and he came here to Maryland, of all places, to play two quick practice shows before heading over the pond! The first of the two was held right here in our very own backyard, at the beautiful Fager’s Island on 59th Street and the bay on Friday, Nov. 20th! The second was held Saturday, Nov. 21, just over the bay bridge from us in Gambrills, Md., at a little place called Molloy’s Irish Pub. Not sure why or how he decided to come to Maryland for these quick shows but I am just glad that he did and honored to have had the chance to meet him and see him perform!
There was a decent crowd when I arrived for the opening act of the evening, local favorites Speed Queen. They got the crowd good and warmed up and as the minutes passed, the smell of leather began filling the room as the dance floor became more and more crowded. Fans clad in black leather jackets, biker boots and plenty of good ol’ Chuck Taylor’s, met CJ Ramone with many cheers as he jumped onto the stage and got straight to it, kicking things off with one of his newest songs “Understanding,” the first track on his latest album Last Chance To Dance, out last Nov. 2014. This is the second solo album he has released as CJ RAMONE, the first being Reconquista, released in 2012. Both are available for purchase through his website www.cjramone.com and they are both great. They were both recorded and produced on low budgets, in the same raw sounding, DIY Punk Rock style. That raw, almost live sounding, recording style is what made the Ramones and punk rock so great! I, for one, love both of his albums and love that he continues to keep the spirit of punk rock music alive and rockin’!
He went on to play many Ramones classics, the first of which was “Judy is a Punk.” It sounded just as good as ever and really got the crowd moving. Somewhere in there he performed one of my favorites, “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend,” and he continued to mix in more songs from his new album. He played every song just a lil’ bit sped up, one right after the other, almost blending together, which is just how the Ramones would have done it! He stood with a very punk rock stance, bass hung low, almost rested on his knee, with his right foot cocked to the side, almost twisting his ankle while intensely belting through each song! It was all so very punk rock and I loved every minute of it! CJ continued to pay tribute and speak about “the guys” thanking them for everything from the music to changing his life. He wrapped the show with a tribute to the recently deceased drummer of Motörhead, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, who died on November 11. (See Sonic Notes 11/20.) In 1991 Motörhead released a song entitled “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.,” a song that was written in the band’s honor, of course, and CJ performed it just right!! Overall, the entire show was non-stop adrenaline, energy-fueled fun and I still can’t believe it all happened at Fager’s Island.
After the show, I had the amazing chance to chat with CJ Ramone for a few minutes and I spoke with his two supporting musicians for this show as well. Josh Blackway was on guitar and handled backing vocals and Chris Eller provided that steady beat on the drums. They told me they were both semi-locals so I tried, of course, to find out more about how they ended up with this crazy opportunity, but they didn’t have time to get into it. I also wanted to find out if they would be touring with him in Europe and who is  credited on the new CD, but again, no time for all my questions. I did, however, find the credits on CJ’s first solo album, Reconquista, which read, CJ Ramone  - vocals, bass, Steve Soto - guitar, backing vocals, Dan Root - guitar, backing vocals, Pete Sosa - drums. So again I am not sure where Josh and Chris, both excellent musicians, fit into all of this but I was happy to have met them as well!
Of course, all of this got me thinking that I have to give a little background info on just how iconic this music and the Ramones really are. I’m sure there are many fans out there who know more about them than even I; however, I felt compelled to do a lil’ research, to refresh my own knowledge and to help educate a whole new generation of fans. So here it goes...
RAMONES is an iconic punk rock band, originally formed in New York City, which was really one of the first bands ever to be labeled as Punk Rock. Literally, the phrase did not exist until rock journalists of their day referred to them as ‘punks’ and bam! ... a brand new culture was born! Their very first show was played at the infamous C.B.G.B. in New York City on August 16, 1974, where they quickly became a regular act. C.B.G.B.’s was an iconic music club that was opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal in Manhattan's East Village, NYC, and sadly was closed in 2006. The letters C.B.G.B. stood for country, bluegrass, and blues; however, because of booking bands like the Ramones, Patti Smith Group, Blondie and Talking Heads, the club became historically known as the birth place of Punk Rock Music!
Somehow, the Ramones’ very loud, very fast and unpolished sound quickly found its way overseas, helping to inspire a whole new generation of European teens who were eager for a new, energetic sound. This led to the creation of even more iconic punk rock groups such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash who appeared by ‘76. The Ramones truly helped inspire and shape a whole new music scene throughout the ‘70s as they toured around the country. This all, of course, paved the way for yet another giant branch on the music genre tree, leading to many, many more sub-genres that still continue to pop up today, including but not limited to, hardcore punk, post-punk, alternative rock, grunge, pop punk, skate punk, ska punk, garage punk, glam punk, riot grrrl, horror punk, and yes, even Christian punk! Thank you Ramones for starting it all and a big thanks to CJ Ramone for still keeping their music alive and in true punk spirit!
Some have argued or debated even, on who can really call themselves a Ramone, but I think if anyone can, CJ would be one of the few on that list. Though it is true he was not one of the original founding members, Christopher Joseph Ward (A.K.A. C. J. Ramone) has certainly paid his dues and is still keeping the band’s music going strong. Ramones founding members were lead singer Jeffrey Hyman, A.K.A. Joey Ramone (1951-2001), guitarist John Cummings, A.K.A. Johnny Ramone (1948-2004), bassist Douglas Colvin, A.K.A. Dee Dee Ramone (1951-2002), and drummer Thomas Erdelyi, A.K.A. Tommy Ramone (1949-2014). They first adopted Ramone as a surname based on the well known fact that Sir Paul McCartney had used the pseudonym Paul Ramon in his early days of performing and they thought it would be funny to create these sort of alter-images of themselves, ones that would be ‘cooler’ than they saw themselves. This idea blossomed into the whole, fun-loving spirit of the band and so the name Ramones simply became the band’s name.
Tommy was the first to stop touring with the group in ‘78; however, he continued to produce their records under his birth name. They brought in drummer Marc Bell, A.K.A. Marky Ramone, to fill his seat but he was replaced from ‘83 to ‘87 by Richard Reinhardt, A.K.A. Richie Ramone. It is well known that the band was going through a lot during these years, including struggling with the stresses of touring, addictions, temptations and even a scandalous lovers triangle! Lead singer Joey’s girlfriend, Linda Marie Daniele, fell in love with guitarist Johnny and the two were married in ‘84. Johnny and Linda’s marriage lasted 20 years before his passing in 2004. Joey and Johnny continued touring but more and more began working separately in the studio until they eventually stopped speaking to each other at all. I am sure this made for strange working conditions, to say the least, and so the shuffle of band members continued.
Richie Ramone was briefly replaced in ‘87 by Elvis Ramone, A.K.A. Clem Burke (of Blondie and the Romantics), who only played two shows with them before Marky rejoined the band and stayed with them until they retired in ‘96. Dee Dee quit touring and recording with them in the studio during the making of their eleventh studio album, 1989's Brain Drain; however, he continued to write music for the group until they retired.
This is when Marine Christopher Joseph Ward, A.K.A. CJ Ramone, got the call to audition for one of his favorite bands. Being a native New Yorker, born Oct. 8, 1965, in Deer Park, he had grown up watching this scene explode in the city and by 1983 he began playing in punk rock bands who idolized the originals. CJ performed with the Ramones for the first time in Leicester, England in 1989 when he was just 25 years old, and he spent the next seven years touring, performing and recording, playing bass and performing many of the lead vocals until they officially retired in ‘96. He recorded three official studio albums with them: Mondo Bizarro (1992), Acid Eaters (1994), and Adios Amigos! (1995). He even married Marky Ramone’s niece Chessa, and though the two are now divorced, they did have two children together, Liam and Liliana. CJ is currently married to attorney Denise Barton, with whom he shares one daughter, Mia Dove.
After the official retirement, CJ and Dee Dee Ramone both continued to write music and perform music with many other musicians over the years, including one together. A Ramones tribute band called The Ramainz, formed by Dee Dee, his wife Barbara Zampini (A.K.A. Barbara Ramone) and Marky Ramone. CJ has continued to play in many, many other punk rock bands and has continued to thank and keep the spirit of the Ramones alive! All in all, I’d have to say, to any of the nay sayers, that all of this solidifies CJ’s place in the Ramone family, then, now and forever more!
His current tour schedule is short but grueling, in true punk rock fashion; he played the two shows here in Md., there are twelve listed on the current European Tour and two more when he returns to the states, which makes a total of 16 shows all within 30 days, and his facebook says possibly more to be added. Not too shabby for a guy who just celebrated his 50th birthday! Keep it up CJ! Thank you again for a great show and everything you do ... we salute you sir!! 15241447387980 ALLEN TOUSSAINT – Treasured Memories http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/ALLEN-TOUSSAINT-Treasured-Memories
I’m in New Orleans preparing for the CHADD conference I wrote about in Coconut Times last month.  The last thing I do at night and first thing I do upon waking is turn on WWOZ; the best radio station ever.  This morning I heard just the first few words of a poem and thought to myself, “Gee - that sounds like Allen Toussaint’s voice and his piano playing in the background.”  His talk about growing up and visiting with his country relatives and sitting on their porch at night with no electricity yet feeling so safe and loved - This is what inspired him to write the beautiful song “Southern Nights” recorded by Glen Campbell.
I was thinking that Mr. Toussaint had popped into WWOZ to help with their fundraising drive and was shocked to hear the show host announce that Allen had died just hours before from a heart attack while touring in Madrid, Spain.  What a tremendous loss to this city and music lovers around the world.  This most kind, soft spoken southern gentleman has left us with a legacy that will live on as long as music is cherished!
I grew up listening to his songs such as “Mother-In-Law” sung be Ernie K-Doe, “Lipstick Traces” sung by Benny Spellman, silly songs like “Splish Splash I was Taking a Bath,” the most beautiful “Tell It like It Is” sung by Aaron Neville, “Get Out of My Life Woman” recorded by many including Jerry Garcia and the Doors, “Working In The Coal Mine” recorded by Lee Dorsey, “Lady Marmalade” (Patti LaBelle), “Yes I Can Can,” “Ride Your Pony,” “Fortune Teller,” “Sneakin Sally Through the Alley,” and the list just goes on and on.
In more recent years I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing both Allen Toussaint and Irma Thomas.  Irma has recorded many of Allen’s songs including my favorite entitled “It’s Raining.” I saw them both perform this song last spring at French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest.  As a matter of fact, this was the only song Irma sang at the French Quarter Fest as it was her opening song and the heavens just opened up with a tremendous thunder storm.  Irma also introduced us to Allen’s “Ruler of My Heart” which Nora Jones just sang on OZ. Allen produced, along with Elvis Costello, the first CD to be recorded in NOLA after hurricane Katrina entitled “River in Reverse.”  I’m certainly feeling his “Tears, Tears and More Tears” and “Where is the Love” from that Grammy-nominated album.
I’m not going to tell my Allen stories today but next time remind me to at least tell you about the first time I saw him driving his Rolls down Frenchman Street - really funny.  I would like to share the conversation I just had with Charmaine Neville.  She is forever “firing” on stage her long time piano player and band leader, Amasa Miller.  Charmaine told me that whenever she did a benefit with Allen Toussaint, he’d tease her by saying, “have you fired Amasa yet?  Cause I’d really like to be in your band.”  Charmaine told me that her bass player was touring with Allen and had called her at 3:30am from Spain to tell her the sad news.  Charmaine says, “Well, that big band up in heaven just got even better.”
Pat Jolly (photographer and Night Mayor of New Orleans Scene) wrote the following to me this morning - “Allen was our greatest New Orleans musical hero and one of the world's most amazingly talented and beloved musicians of our century. He had so many cherished qualities of being what it really means to be a human being. He touched so many people's lives in such a personal way. He was kind, caring, gave of himself to others smilingly, and was always graciously exemplifying the definition of being a true gentlemen.”
Throughout his life Mr. Toussaint kept R & B alive in the tradition and continually took us to new places with his soul and funk.  WWOZ is playing “Everything I Do Is Going to Be Funky From Now On” as I write this tribute.  New Orleans celebrates both life and one’s home going and I’m sure I’ll be second lining for Allen later this week.  Thanks for letting me share!

15211446305376 X Ambassadors - VHS tour - w/ Skylar Grey and Kevin Garrett http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/X-Ambassadors-VHS-tour-w-Skylar-Grey-and-Kevin-Garrett     Hello readers out there in Coco-land. I finally had some free time to get back out there and actually have some fun. This last Sun., Oct. 24th, I took a lil’ day trip up the road to the Electric Factory in Philadelphia to see one of my new favorite bands, X Ambassadors. What an amazing night, I had so much fun, my (face) cheeks are still sore from the perm-a-grin I have had plastered on my face all week! I arrived to the area around 5:30pm and there was already a line forming at the door which was not set to open until 6pm. I decided to go walk around and find dinner instead of standing in line but, by the time I got back, the place had completely filled up.
The first opening act was Kevin Garrett, a super young, super new, super sounding musician. This 24 year old is originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., but has spent the last few years honing in on his sound, living and performing in Brooklyn, N.Y. He has shared the stage with such artists as James Vincent McMorrow and Norah Jones, among others. Garrett just released his debut EP Mellow Drama, which is already getting a lot of attention. His sound is very ‘Mellow’ but his lyrics are that of a poetic ‘Drama,’ just as the title suggests. It really could not have been more appropriately named. His performance was short but strong and we had a chance to say hi to him as he was packing up outside! No release date as of yet but he is currently working on a full length album, so we will be on the look-out.
Next up, was the lovely and super talented Skylar Grey, who was even more amazing than I had hoped. Grey has been making a name for herself across all genres, having dabbled in everything from folk and pop to hip-hop and even rap. She gained a lot of recognition in 2011 when she was nominated for writing the hit song “Love the Way You Lie,” which was made famous by Eminem and Rihanna. Their version of the song reached number one across 26 different charts and was nominated for four different Grammy Awards. In 2012, Grey recorded a stripped down version for her fourth EP, The Buried Sessions of Skylar Grey, that features just her and her piano and is simply lovely.
Grey and X Ambassadors are currently signed to the same label, KIDinaKORNER, which is owned by multi platinum producer, Alex de Kid. This is probably what led to her collaboration with Sam Harris of X Ambassadors for her latest single “Cannonball.” The song just released on Sept. 25th and has a great video available on You Tube that we also have featured under their tour ad on our website. I was happy to see that Harris did come out and join her to perform the song near the end of her set and it was amazing! Overall, she gave an incredible performance and it was great to see her live. She has a very dynamic voice and I would highly recommend checking her out.
We all patiently waited while the stage was broken down and set back up again. Then suddenly, the crowd seemed to push forward and magically double in size right before X Ambassadors appeared. It was as though the crowd was somehow that tuned into the band or perhaps it was the venue; either way it was interesting to see and nice that the place filled up for the show. Lead singer Sam Harris was out first and the crowd went wild as the rest of the band took their positions.
Things really seem to be taking off for these guys since the release of their debut album, VHS, on June 23rd, which was right after we saw them last at this year’s Firefly Festival, 2015. The first single they released off the album,  “Renegades,” was quickly picked up by radio stations and television commercials. As fate would have it, Jeep Wrangler also had just released their new Jeep ‘Renegade’ so the song was a perfect match for their ad campaign. The song knocked Walk the Moon’s hit song “Shut Up and Dance,” out of the number one spot on Billboards Hot Rock Songs chart and has helped the album reach platinum status in Canada so far.
They opened their set with two songs from the new album, “Loveless” and “Hang On.” Both songs are a bit milder and more soulful sounding than the rest of the album; however, it seemed to be the perfect way to warm up the crowd who were captivated and chanting along by the middle of “Hang On.” Next up, they played one of my absolute favorites, “Love Songs Drug Songs.” It was the first song that I had ever heard by them, and I was hooked!! It appeared on their second EP of the same name and was released back in May of 2013. I can’t remember when or how exactly I came across it, but I do remember they were on my list to check out at Firefly 2014. I did see a little of their set that year but I failed to write about them; so, when I saw their name on this year’s line-up, they made it to the top of my must-see list and they were incredible. To read more about their performance at Firefly 2015, check out my review that was published back in June @ http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/Firefly-2015-Thursday-part-1.
Lead singer Sam Harris is a very talented musician who has an amazing voice and also happens to be able to play the piano, guitar, bass, saxophone, drums and at one point, he even pulled out a harmonica. He was super fun to watch as he constantly moved around the stage singing, dancing and switching between instruments. Keyboardist Casey Harris is truly a pleasure to watch on the stage. Though he has been blind since birth, he has become one amazing musician and has found a performing style all his own. He really lets it all go; stationed behind his keyboards, he never stops dancing and moving ferociously along with the music, giving every song his all! He seemed to be feeling every minute of the whole experience in a bigger and deeper way than most could probably understand and his happiness seemed to radiate out through every keystroke.
Casey is the older brother of Sam, who have both known guitarist Noah Feldshuh since Sam and Noah shared the same kindergarten class. In many interviews I have seen of them, the three of them have all said that they always knew they wanted to be in a band and that they always knew they wanted to get out of their small hometown of Ithaca, N.Y. They met drummer Adam Levin while attending college at The New School, a university in New York City, and have been a tight group ever since. This closeness is very apparent while they are performing; you can see the way they all feed off of each other, pushing one another past their limits, which overall, makes for one very impressive show.
X Ambassadors are also becoming known for finding lots of ways to connect with their fans and they have made tons of special appearances along their travels. The video for their hit song “Renegades” features people with disabilities who, like Casey, are overcoming the odds, which is really what that song and much of their album is all about. I was happy to read on their insta-gram page that, earlier that day, they stopped by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to wish one lucky girl a very happy birthday. It is inspiring to see how their music is reaching so many different kinds of people and helping them to overcome whatever they may be dealing with!
The crowd went nuts as Sam sang, “I wanna be “Naked” with you,” a song that is really about letting go of insecurities and just being your raw ‘naked’ self! Then he dedicated the song “Gorgeous” to all his Philly fans and we all just lost it again! I didn’t think the crowd could get any more worked up; and then they played “Renegades” and O My Goodness, the energy that exploded was enough to electrify the whole darn factory! LOL!! I had an opportunity to say hi after the show and I have to say that they really are the nicest group of guys ever. I asked them if they remembered seeing me at Firefly and they very nicely replied Yes, and excitedly went on to say that, “Firefly is our favorite festival ever, hands down.” Laughing and smiling, Casey quickly went into the story, stating how “it was such a crazy blur this year. We flew into Dover and arrived just an hour before we had to be on-stage and then this electrical storm was coming so everyone had to scramble to get the equipment packed up and get us back to the Hotel. It all happened so quick but it was so much fun.”
The VHS tour is their second headlining tour and has been selling out dates across the country. The tour continues through December and then they just announced that they will be opening for Muse on the Drones North American tour. The closest dates to us are at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa., on Jan. 31 or the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 1 2016. Tickets are on sale now and these shows will most likely sell out so I would highly recommend buying yours today! It was also recently announced that they will be performing at this years VH1’s Best Music of 2015 concert, which will air live on Nov. 12th @ 9pm. For info please visit: xambassadors.com

15111445032720 Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans? http://www.coconuttimes.com/articles/Special-Features/Do-You-Know-What-It-Means-To-Miss-New-Orleans

There's a very famous song entitled Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans which became even more beloved after hurricane Katrina hit just over ten years ago and displaced so many from their NOLA homes. If you've ever been to New Orleans, you know you've left at least a little piece of your heart when you had to return home.  If you haven't yet been to the Big Easy, you'll discover what we're talking about when you come to the CHADD conference November 12 - 14.

CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization providing education, advocacy, and support for those with ADHD and coexisting conditions. With worldwide membership, CHADD hosts the largest gathering of individuals and families affected by ADHD and the professionals and educators who support the ADHD community. Attendees come to the annual conference year after year for the latest in ADHD-related research, education, trends, treatment options, solutions and to network with others.

The 2015 conference theme, ADHD: Compassion and Courage in the Big Easy refers to overcoming challenges faced by those managing ADHD, and providing opportunities to explore current thinking and emerging trends. The conference will focus on different perspectives and provide participants access to cutting-edge ADHD research and information to build new understanding.

I'm writing this to encourage you to register NOW and reserve your room at the beautiful Hyatt Regency on Loyola Avenue while rooms are still available at the special discounted rate.  I also urge you to plan to spend a few more days in New Orleans if your budget will allow so you can fully enjoy all the sessions and special events the conference has to offer and get to see and know the city.  Visit our web site, CHADD.org or go directly to conference info at http://www.chadd.org/Training-Events/Annual-International-Conference-on-ADHD.aspx  You may also call our National Resource Center tr 800-233-4050.

The city is known for its gumbo of music from many genres and eras, rich decadent food and its oh so unique melting pot of cultures. Here's my "must do and see" list for making the most of your trip.

·    To get from the airport to the hotel, just pick up a round trip shuttle pass by the baggage claim.  You can book online before you leave home and perhaps save a few bucks.

·      Getting around New Orleans is easy; the hotel will have info on all the bus and trolley routes as well as brochures on special river boat and bayou tours.  Cabs are also readily available.

·     Please stop by AAA in your area and pick up a tour book on Louisiana.  They have a wonderful self guided tour of the French Quarter and the Garden district. You can go online and print out the tours without being a AAA member.

·      Please be sure to ride the trolley car up St. Charles (just a short walk from the hotel).  This will take you past the Garden District with many miles of beautiful homes and fabulous architecture, past Loyola and Tulane Universities and the Audubon Zoo and Gardens.

·     There's such great food in the city - EVERYWHERE!  However, if you want some         healthy choices for your room, Rouse's Food Market is just a few blocks from our hotel and has amazing selections of fresh and lovely healthy produce.

·     Best free magazines and weekly papers - Off Beat, Gambit and Where Y'at can be  found throughout the city.

·      Best radio station - WWOZ 90.7FM.  Owned by the Jazz and Heritage Foundation, this station is public radio at its best with no ads and great shows.

·      Oh the music - do sign up for the Friday event at The Little Gem Saloon. This is a really beautiful music venue just across the street from the hotel on Rampart Street.  The music planned for our event will be wonderful. If you're still in town Sunday morning, the Little Gem has a delectable Sunday Brunch with a trio playing fabulous music with a slightly gypsy flavor of a bygone era.

·     Of course Bourbon Street is known worldwide for its music and good times flavor. Irvin Mayfield's Playhouse is right in the elegant Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon and offers great Jazz in a beautiful atmosphere.  Do walk down this street and sip a drink while doing so if you choose.  It's legal.  Steps off Bourbon on Saint. Peter's Street you'll find Preservation HalI which is known worldwide for traditional Jazz.

·     I strongly recommend you also go to the very next neighborhood called the Faubourg Marigny and visit the various music clubs on Frenchman Street.  This is where the locals go and it's really great. When not touring worldwide, John Boutte has a regular gig Saturday night at d.b.a on Frenchman.  He'll probably start about the time our tour ends and I'll take anyone interested to Frenchman after the Ghost Tour finishes.  If you like to jitter bug, d.b.a. is the place to be Sunday afternoons and many of the dancers of all ages come dressed in vintage clothes from the 40's and 50's.  It's such fun!  Monday night my dear friend Charmaine Neville performs at Snug Harbor and you just never know who will show up to join her on stage.  The Spotted Cat, Apple Barrel, Bamboula's, Blue Nile, Three Muses are some other great music spots on Frenchman Street.

·    You also must visit the greatest music store I've ever seen; The Louisiana Music Factory also on Frenchman Street.  Pick up some new and used music to take home with you from this great spot which often hosts live music performances in house.

·      Walking down Decatur Street from the French Quarter toward Frenchman Street, you will pass the French Market Cafe and The Gazebo which are both wonderful outdoor daytime live music venues.  If you arrive to the conference early, be sure to get some red beans and rice, pecan pie and/or gumbo from either of these spots and enjoy local live music and fresh air!

·     Of course, you must see all the stalls at the French Market just between The Gazebo and the end of the French Quarter.  Be sure to pick up a fun pin or ear rings from Oscar Donehue and see what other creative delights you can find for souvenirs.
Oh my, I could go on and on about New Orleans.  It’s such a great place and I’m ever so thrilled that our conference will be there this year.  Sure hope to see you there!
