Boy Howdy Music Fans!

Is it really Sept 1st already? Another Labor Day weekend in O.C., it’s hard to believe. Next thing you know it’s Bike Week, Sunfest and full blown football season. The general concensus around town is that ‘06 was the summer that went by the wayside. As in way too fast!
Last week’s Violent Femmes concert at Seacrets was a blast. A multitude of locals showed up to relive their youth to the garage times of the Femmes. The band sounded amazingly true to form with their live performance sounding very much like the studio offerings of years past. The act did much of the material from their break-out debut album from the late ‘80s and rounded it out with some new stuff off the recent catalog.

While we’re on Seacrets, mark your calendars for the American Cancer Society’s Pink Ribbon “Jammin for a Cure” benefit in the Morley Hall on Tues 10/3 beginning around 4 pm. The roster is quickly filling up with musical acts. This year’s theme is a divas show featuring many local talents from the fairer sex. The event is to benefit breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, awareness and prevention. The list so far is Lauren Glick Band, Red Letter Day, Pompous Pie and Teenage Rust officially but more acts will certainly join the fight as the event nears. For info call Dawn Hodge at 443-497-1198 and remember, after 10 pm you must be over 18 for the call! Rock on Divas!

This Sunday, (9/3), marks a special event at BJ’s on the Water, 75th and Coastal Hwy. A Guitarist extraordinaire returns to BJ’s by popular demand, in the person of one Danny Morris. A former member of the legendary bar band the Nighthawks, Danny broke out on his own in the late nineties. The show he brings to BJ’s highlights guitar greats such as Dwayne Eddie ‘twang’, Link Wray ‘power chords’, Dick Dale and Ventures ‘surf tone’. Top that off with some Chicago and Texas ‘blues tones’, and that represents the guitar stylings of Danny Morris. The show reminds one of getting a musical education, a rock-n-roll-through-the-years’ cram session. This act is my pick of the holiday weekend, so make it on over to 75th Street Sunday for some good clean fun!
Congratulations to the happy couple Mary and Jeff on their upcoming nuptials next Sat. Both avid music fans, they’ve hired my own Pompous Pie to play their wedding party and we’re all fired up about it. Salud!
Shortly after that wedding I’ll be trekking to the Bavarian Alps for a real German Oktoberfest. We’ve laid plans to visit Austria, Switzerland and Italy while we’re there. In that it’s my first trip to Europe, I’m very excited and almost anxious. In Germany for Oktoberfest, I think they might even sell beer there, just a hunch!

Pompous Pie is back at the Plim Plaza’s Caribbean Pool Bar on 2nd St. and Boardwalk. We’ve really been killin’ it each week on these Fridays (7:30) pm) and the crowds have been extremely receptive. Only one more week to go, Fri 9/8, will be the last of the summer on 2nd St. After the Euro-trip Pompous Pie will be back at Buxy’s Salty Dog on 9/30 and, this just in, M.R. Ducks on 10/7 at 3:30 pm.

Have a great weekend and keep your eyes on the weather! See ya’ll around the campfire. Tah!
Marco Ink.
