Offering classy dining and quick delivery, Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill is conveniently located in midtown Ocean City on 56th Street.
Ask any Ocean City local, “How are you?,” and his or her response will most likely be, “Living the dream.” The owner of brand new Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill on 56th Street is, indeed, living the dream. His lifelong goal was to open his own pizza joint with a full service bar, and this summer his dream was realized. Boasting a swank interior with cathedral ceilings, dark wood tabletops, stained glass details, and large flat screen televisions, Johnny’s Pizza serves specialty pizzas from around the world and the coldest draft beers in town. Plus, they deliver anywhere in Ocean City, and are planning to expand their delivery route to Ocean Pines in the near future. Visit or call (410) 524-7499 to place your delivery or carryout order.
The restaurant, which is entirely separate from the carryout and delivery store, serves a Rise and Shine breakfast, and is open until 4 am, catering to lively late night crowds. Large pizza pies are 20-inches, which is considerably larger than most. Delivery is also available until 4 am. Inside, at the elegant dark oak bar, draft beer flows through glycol lines that keep it perfectly pressurized at an ice-cold temperature. Currently on tap at Johnny’s Pizza Bar is Longboard Lager, Shock Top, Dale’s Pale Ale, and Evolution Summer Session. Additionally, a large selection of bottled microbrews has already earned Johnny’s Pizza Bar recognition in popular beer magazines.
I stopped into Johnny’s Pizza Bar for the first time this week with my friend and Coconut Times coworker, Cathy Germann, and I think I’ve discovered a new favorite hotspot. The enthusiastic owner and father of four, Johnny, has an infectious spirit. He greeted us and told us the back-story of his new pub. Mike T., the knowledgeable bartender, also introduced himself and treated us to a round of craft beer and robust Malbec wine. As we sipped our beverages, we admired the top-of-the-line sound system, which includes Electro-Voice® speakers.
Johnny presented Cathy and me with a basket of sweet Honey BBQ Wings for an appetizer. Served with fresh celery and blue cheese dip, wings are available in nine flavors, ranging from mild to “call for beer extreme heat.” Smokey BBQ, spicy BBQ, spicy teriyaki, honey teriyaki, Old Bay, Cajun, garlic parmesan, and Jamaican jerk wings may be ordered in quantities of five, ten, or twenty. Plump and tender, the glazed honey BBQ wings are finger-licking good.
Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill features approximately 21 specialty pizzas from around the world. We devoured Johnny’s Special pie, which includes pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, and onions. Johnny added banana peppers to our pizza for extra zest. Not too thin and not too thick, the pizza crust is just right, and the pizza sauce includes the ideal combination of spices to give it a tasty zest. Other specialty pizzas that keep the crowds coming back to Johnny’s Pizza Bar are Hawaiian, Cheesesteak, Mediterranean Chicken, Meat Lovers, White Pizza, and Taco Pizza. Try the Barefoot Britney for a delicious combination of mushrooms, sweet white onions, green pepper, and black olives. Or, sample the Au Gratin Pizza for a unique blend of thin-sliced potatoes, applewood smoked bacon, ham, onions, and extra cheese. I recommend the Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Pizza, which includes fresh pineapple, provolone, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, red onions, and smoky BBQ chicken. The Thai Chicken is quite intriguing, offering a concoction of grilled chicken breast seasoned in a spicy peanut and sesame ginger sauce, green onions, shredded carrots, and peanuts.
Seafood lovers should order the Shrimp Scampi Pizza—steamed shrimp, mild onions, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, fresh oregano, Italian parsley, and a white wine garlic butter sauce. Or, try Cathy’s favorite pie—Maryland Blue Crab Pizza with crab imperial sauce, Old Bay seasoning, backfin crabmeat, and cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Another creative specialty pizza on the menu is South of the Border Pizza, which includes carne asada, sweet corn, pepper jack cheese, black olives, salsa, and jalapeños. The Coney Island Pizza is comprised of grilled hot dogs, baked beans, and a touch of yellow mustard. Do you like to spice things up? Order the Jamaican Jerk Chicken Pizza with grilled jerk spiced chicken breast, sweet-and-sour Caribbean sauce, mild onions, and banana and sweet peppers. Of course, you’re more than welcome to build your own pizza pie, choosing from a variety of delicious meats and vegetables, or you may order The Works—pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, green pepper, black olives, onions, and extra cheese.
Johnny’s Pizza Bar also serves up an extensive menu of subs, salads, and side items. Pizza Steak, Italian Cold Cut, Chicken Parmesan, Meatball and Cheese, Thanksgiving Turkey Sub, and a variety of Cheesesteaks complete the sub sandwich offerings at Johnny’s Pizza Pub. Cheesy Breadsticks, Grilled Hot Dog, Chicken Tenders, Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Buffalo Chicken Dip, Fries, Fried Green Beans, Zucchini Sticks, and Sliders are just a few of many side items available at the restaurant. Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill also presents an Eastern Shore Raw Bar with steamed shrimp, clams, and crab legs.
As Cathy and I concluded our impressive meal at Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill, Johnny presented the bar patrons with a round of Nuts And Berries, a yummy dessert liqueur that tastes like a cookie. As I noted the NASCAR, surfing, baseball, and football memorabilia decorating the walls in the extremely cool dining room, I asked Mike T. if Johnny’s Pizza Bar favors a particular sports team. He replied that Johnny’s is friendly to all sports fans, but favors the Baltimore Ravens.
Before we left, Johnny generously treated Cathy and me to a complimentary tank top, sporting the Johnny’s Pizza Bar logo—Dolphin 56 strumming a guitar. Dolphin 56 is an adorable ocean legend that has been spotted playing alongside boats and spectators from Florida to New England in the past 30 years, including here in Ocean City in April 2010. The dolphin is tagged with the number “56.” Coincidentally, Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill is conveniently located in midtown Ocean City on 56th Street.
Stop into Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill on Friday night and rock out to the Lime Green Band. You’ll never pay a cover at Johnny’s. I highly recommend that you experience the elegance of Johnny’s Pizza Bar & Grill for yourself. For delivery, call (410) 524-7499 or visit
