It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas? No. It’s May, which means a new issue of Coconut Times will be on stands each and every Friday from now through October. May is also when I resume the most wonderful job on the planet—informing our readers about my favorite restaurants in Ocean City for the “Best Bites” column. I can’t think of a better way to kick off the season than having dinner with my wonderful mother at one of our all-time favorite restaurants—Coins Pub & Restaurant.
My mom, Nancy, and I love Coins Pub because all of its food is homemade from scratch and cooked to order. “Even our gravy is homemade, and it makes such a difference,” says Charlotte, longtime manager of Coins Pub & Restaurant. Combine fresh ingredients and home-style cooking with early bird specials and budget-friendly prices, and you have Coins’ winning recipe. Coming soon, look for T-shirts with the restaurant’s new slogan, “Coins—It just makes cents.”
During the month of May, locals and visitors can take advantage of Coins’ off-season discounts, including Prime Rib night on Wednesday and half-priced entrées on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Happy hour is a year-round celebration at Coins from 3-6 p.m., and the restaurant is locally renowned for its incredible early bird menu.
Available every day from 4-6 p.m., the early bird menu at Coins features delectable options such as Flounder, Crab Cake, Prime Rib, Sirloin Steak, Chopped Sirloin, Chicken Teriyaki, Fettuccine Alfredo, Seafood Marinara, and Spaghetti & Meatball. Each of these dishes is served in enormous portions, and most cost less than $10. Plus, each entrée includes homemade side dishes. What a deal!
When Mom and I sat down at our spacious booth in the open dining room, we knew we’d order our favorite appetizers—Clams Casino and BBQ Shrimp. Our lovely server, Crystal, greeted us and told us about the daily specials: a full rack of BBQ ribs, shrimp scampi over linguini, and two 4-ounce filets sautéed with onions, mushrooms, and a Dijon demi glaze. The catch of the day was Mahi Mahi, and the soup of the day was Maryland Crab.
As expected, our appetizers were amazing. Topped with bacon, cheese, and garlic butter, the topneck Clams Casino are extra cheesy and juicy to the last bite. Wrapped in crispy bacon and topped with a tangy BBQ sauce, the meaty BBQ Shrimp are ravishing.
For our entrées, Mom ordered the Tournedos Du Jour—sautéed twin filets with onions, mushrooms, and Dijon demi glaze—and I ordered the Seafood Imperial, which includes shrimp, sea scallops, and jumbo lump crab in a delicate cream sauce.  The Seafood Imperial may have moved to the very top of my list of favorite dishes at Coins, just above the Veal Parmigiana and Filet Mignon, which are also must-try recipes. My dinner was ultra creamy with mammoth chunks of meaty seafood. Mom thoroughly enjoyed her filet, which melted in her mouth. I tried a few bites, and would definitely order it next time. The steak bites are cooked to perfection, and the homemade sauce is divine.
From the sea, Crab Cakes are a best selling dish at Coins Pub & Restaurant.  Order a single or double Crab Cake platter, or add an 8-ounce sirloin filet for a Steak and Cake dinner. Other seafood dinners at Coins Pub include Filet of Flounder, Fried Shrimp, Crab Imperial, Soft Shell Crabs, and Twin Lobster Tails. Stuffed Shrimp, Broiled Scallops, and Stuffed Filet of Flounder are two dishes bursting with jumbo lump crab imperial. The Broiled Seafood Platter is an irresistible array of flounder, scallops, shrimp, and jumbo lump crab cake.
From the land, Prime Rib, Filet Mignon, and Strip Steak are cooked to order and charbroiled to your taste. Chicken or Veal Marsala is served in a delicious wine sauce with mushrooms. Fried Chicken and Chicken Imperial are hearty meal options for big appetites. Veal Cutlet is breaded and topped with mushrooms & homemade gravy, and Chopped Sirloin is topped with onions & gravy.
All dinner entrées are served with a warm bread basket and a choice of two sides: baked potato, French fries, pasta, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, homemade coleslaw, beer-battered onion rings, pickled beets, applesauce, field of greens, and vegetable du jour. Mom and I always order the Field of Greens salad—spring mix greens, raspberry walnut dressing, crushed walnuts, and blue cheese.
In addition to all of the above scrumptious menu items, appetizers at Coins Pub include Crab Balls, Potato Skins, Buffalo Wings, Smothered Fries, Mozzarella Logs, Steamed Clams or Shrimp, Stuffed Mushroom Caps, Crab Dip, Chicken Fingers, and Shrimp Cocktail. The soups menu is comprised of Cream of Crab, Cream of Crab Cake (topped with Crab Balls), French Onion, and Chili Con Carne. Chef Salad, Greek Salad, and Caesar Salad round out the salads menu at Coins Pub & Restaurant.
Coins Pub also serves up burgers and sandwiches, such as open-faced Reuben, French Dip, Pulled Pork, Shrimp Salad, Soft Shell Crab, Sesame Teriyaki Tuna, and much more. Served with salad and fresh baked bread, the pasta selections are Linguini, Fettuccini Alfredo, and Seafood Alfredo with shrimp, scallops, and jumbo lump crab. A kids menu and lunch and lite fare menu are also available.
With bikini season just around the corner, Mom and I declined to order dessert, but the sinfully tempting sweets were cherry pie, apple pie, carrot cake, cheesecake, and double chocolate cake. Coins Pub & Restaurant caters private parties and ships crab cakes worldwide. For more information, visit <>  or call 410-289-3100.
Located in the 28th Street Plaza on the oceanside of Coastal Highway, Coins Pub & Restaurant features a large, family-friendly dining room on one side and a large, circular bar with Keno, arcade games, and flat-screen televisions on the other side. Local faces fill the friendly staff. And some of the area’s best bands, such as Full Circle and Tranzfusion, keep customers dancing well into the night. Stop into Coins Pub today for smiles, friends, and the best homemade food in town.
