Johnny’s full-service bar (bartenders Sarah &Max) offers ice-cold craft, microbrew, and seasonal beer running through glycol draft lines.
Did you know that Johnny’s Pizza & Pub on 56th Street & Coastal Highway has its own dough factory? The dough for Johnny’s pizza is made fresh daily, and his pizza pies are cooked in Johnny’s state-of-the-art oven at 500 degrees. Featuring such delicacies as Neptune’s Seafood Feast Pizza—with garlic butter, fresh shrimp, Old Bay seasoning, Maryland blue crabmeat, white onions, and mozzarella and Wisconsin white cheddar cheeses—Johnny’s Pizza & Pub is leagues above the competition.
In addition to gourmet specialty pizzas like the Teriyaki Chicken Pizza—white meat chicken breast spun in teriyaki sauce, a pinch of Cajun seasoning, white onions, green peppers, grated carrots, and teriyaki glaze sauce—Johnny’s Pizza also serves the coldest brews in Ocean City. The full-service bar regularly rotates its select beers on tap to guarantee only the freshest brews run through its ice-cold glycol draft lines. Owner Johnny Hofman keeps at least three local craft brews on tap at all times.
What pairs well with beer and pizza? Entertainment, of course. Johnny’s Pizza & Pub boasts a surround sound system with Electro-Voice® speakers, plus an authorized Orange Door Experience® high definition music video system, which streams official music videos. A retractable projection screen displays theater-sized surf movies and sports events. Live bands and deejays frequently entertain the nightlife at Johnny’s Pizza & Pub. Patrons will notice a ton of USA sports memorabilia, as well as local school sports teams and locally-focused fishing magazine covers, donning the walls. Everywhere you look, you’ll notice something new and unique, from baseball and football to surfing and Olympic games, and a few guitars too.
I was pleased to see a full house at Johnny’s Pizza & Pub this week when I visited the restaurant with my fiancé, Joey Steward, and his daughter, Nevaeh Steward. Nevaeh attends the local middle school with owners Johnny and Pam Hofman’s daughter, Brittany. The Hofmans named one gourmet specialty pizza, the Barefoot Brittany, after their daughter. A veggie lover’s recipe, the Barefoot Brittany is topped with mushrooms, black olives, diced tomatoes, green peppers, green olives, and sweet white onions. The Hofmans’ other children, Hunter, Johnny, and Katie, sometimes work alongside their parents at the restaurant.
Joey, Nevaeh, and I started our meal at Johnny’s Pizza & Pub with an order of award winning Perdue bone-in wings. We chose Garlic Parmesan and Glazed Jamaican Jerk and Honey for our flavors. BBQ, Cajun, Teriyaki, Old Bay, Thai Peanut Sauce, and Extreme Heat Straight Red Hot with Cayenne Pepper are just a few more of 17 wing flavors at Johnny’s Pizza & Pub. Jumbo Wings are also available boneless.
For our main course, we shared a Maryland Blue Crab Pizza with crab imperial sauce, Old Bay seasoning, crabmeat, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, butter, and fresh parsley. Served oven hot on a raised rack, this pie is a best seller. A few more gourmet specialty pizzas that absolutely make the “must try” list are the Meat Lovers, White Pizza, American Cheeseburger Pizza, Hawaiian, BBQ Chicken Pizza, Thai Chicken Pizza—spicy peanut and sesame ginger sauce, grilled all white meat tender chicken breast, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, green onions, carrots, and roasted salted peanuts—and The Works with pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, black olives, onions, and extra cheese. You can also build your own 10-inch, 12-inch, or 14-inch pizza pie with your choice of meats, veggies, and fruits and nuts.
In addition to pizza, Johnny’s Pizza & Pub serves Eastern Shore traditional Seafood. Maryland Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes are handpicked, homemade, and handmade using the Chesapeake Bayfront town of Crisfield’s seafood festival award winning recipe. Steamed Shrimp with Old Bay seasoning and cocktail sauce is available by the pound or half pound. Try the Beer Battered Fish Sandwich, which is deep fried and served with lettuce, tomatoes, lemon wedge, and cocktail, mayonnaise, or tarter sauce. Johnny’s Pizza & Pub also offers two delicious soups—rich and creamy New England Clam Chowder with bacon, and Maryland Vegetable Crab Soup full of vegetables, crabmeat, ham, and seafood seasoning.
For extraordinarily hearty appetites, Johnny’s Pizza & Pub offers football-sized Calzones. The Grilled Chicken Calzone is overstuffed with grilled chicken, pepperoni, fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil and mozzarella, cheddar cheese, garlic, Parmesan, oregano, and extra virgin olive oil. The Meat Lovers Calzone is bursting with pepperoni, sausage, cheese, tomato sauce, and spices.
From the “Good Ol’ American Pub Food” menu, try one of Johnny’s half-pound 100 percent beef ultimate burgers with cheese, bacon, mushroom, and Swiss. Or, try it Black and Blue style, which is seasoned with Cajun spice and topped with blue cheese crumbles. Johnny’s Irish Double Dog consists of two grilled all-beef hot dogs on a steamed eight-inch sub roll. Add chili and cheese for an extra satisfying meal. My favorite sandwich is the Hot Pastrami with Swiss. An eight-ounce Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich is also on the menu with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and BBQ or teriyaki glaze.
Johnny’s also features an extensive Subs menu, including Turkey Subs, Meatball Sub, Super Italian Cold Cut Sub, five varieties of Cheese Steak Subs, and Chicken and Meatball Parmesan Subs. Order the Harvest Turkey Sub for smoked turkey breast, hot stuffing, and cool cranberry sauce.
The menu is topped off with salads and side items, including Chicken Tenders, Zucchini Sticks, Tower of Onion Rings, and Beach Fries. For dessert, try one of Johnny’s seasonal Fruit Pies with whipped cream.
Family friendly by day, and a nightlife hotspot after dark, Johnny’s Pizza & Pub has been a staple of the Ocean City community for many years. Check out their webpage, www.johnnyspizzapub.com/ocean-city-in-the-community for a complete list of the causes and fundraisers the Hofman family has supported, including Believe in Tomorrow, Relay for Life, Ocean City Beach Patrol, and Women Supporting Women. I commented to my family that it appears Johnny’s Pizza & Pub is always open, every time I drive by it. Indeed, the year-round restaurant, which includes delivery and a carryout shop, is open 8:00 AM until 4:00 AM, seven days per week during the summer. Dial 410-524-7499 for details.
