Ahhh… the good life! At Macky’s Bayside Bar & Grill, every day is a vacation. Located directly on the bay on 54th Street, the steak & seafood restaurant is open air, which makes it a prime vantage point for relishing sunset views and relaxing in cool, bay breezes on hot summer days. Many of the fun-loving staff members return year after year, and the menu consistently offers excellent steak, pasta, and fresh fish creations.
When I went to Macky’s for dinner this week, I invited my friend, Brandi Mellinger, who is arguably Macky’s number one fan. She is a friend with many of the managers and bartenders, and she is fond of many of the recipes on the menu. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were given a choice of seating, either in the indoor dining room or outside on Macky’s private, sandy, bayfront beach at a table with an umbrella. As an ominous fog was rolling in over the bay, we opted to sit inside where we could enjoy the refreshing breeze and watch the fog over the bay.
Our delightful server, Corrine, greeted us and recited the daily specials. Each day, the servers at Macky’s sample the specials to enhance their knowledge of the menu. The specials for us were a Veggie Burger and Sirloin Steak. The daily pasta special was sautéed Mahi Mahi and Chicken over Fettuccini, and the daily fresh fish specials were Tilapia, Red Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and seared Salmon with Tiger Shrimp. The daily crabmeat special was sautéed Mahi Mahi with Jumbo Lump Crabmeat in a Lobster Dijon sauce. “I’m definitely getting the crabmeat special,” declared Brandi.
We started our meal with two appetizers: Market Tomato Salad and Dotsy’s Delight Crab Dip. The first appetizer is one of my favorite summertime snacks. Thick sliced, fresh local tomatoes and mozzarella cheese with mixed greens in a lemon vinaigrette, balsamic reduction, basil oil, and croustini, the Market Tomato Salad is definitely my favorite appetizer on the menu. The Crab Dip is served with cracked-pepper crackers in a warm bread bowl, and is the top-selling appetizer at Macky’s. We shared this creamy dish and saved a little for our friend, Kristi Kruger, who joined us later in the night for Team Trivia.
Steamed Shrimp, Steamed Clams, Jerk Chicken, Coconut Shrimp, and Fiesta Chicken Quesadilla are just a few more appetizers available at Macky’s. The Super Chicken Nachos are comprised of boneless chicken breast, refried beans, cheddar-jack cheese, lettuce, guacamole, jalapeño peppers, pico de gallo, and sour cream.
Macky’s offers an exciting selection of beef, pork, poultry, pasta, salad, and seafood entrées. As expected, Brandi ordered the Mahi Mahi and Jumbo Lump Crabmeat special. “The Lobster Dijon sauce is phenomenal,” she says. I opted for a zesty taste of the Caribbean—BBQ Caribbean Shrimp. Served on two skewers over a sunset blend rice pilaf, the fresh grilled shrimp are smothered in a sweet and spicy, citrus-chile BBQ sauce with mango salsa. We both thoroughly enjoyed our entrées.
Other scrumptious entrées at Macky’s include NY Strip, Sirloin Steak, Crab Alfredo, Chicken Chesapeake, Texas Kick Ass Ribs, Eastern Shore Rockfish, and all jumbo lump Maryland Style Crab Cakes. One of the most popular entrées is the Three Way Sauté—gulf shrimp, sea scallops, and jumbo lump crabmeat with mushrooms in a white wine herb-butter sauce. I recommend the Stuffed Tilapia, which is overstuffed with jumbo lump crabmeat and topped with homemade imperial sauce. The Andouille Crusted Grouper is a grouper filet crusted with andouille sausage, pan seared and topped with gulf shrimp and Cajun cream sauce.
Pasta lovers should try the Tuscan Chicken Pasta: grilled chicken breast, asparagus tips, roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, and smoked bacon tossed with Penne pasta and Parmesan. This dish is my Mom’s favorite. Also extraordinarily tasty is the Shrimp and Scallop Creole Alfredo, consisting of gulf shrimp, sea scallops, roasted sweet red peppers, and fettuccini in a Creole Alfredo sauce.
Macky’s Bayside also serves up entrée-sized salads, including the Boater’s Choice—mixed greens, romaine, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet red onions, and the daily fresh catch. Doesn’t that sound lip smacking good? For an extra kick of spice, try the Buffalo Chicken Salad or the Jerk Chicken Salad (served with mandarin oranges, pineapple, tomatoes, roasted sweet red peppers, marinated red onions, and poppy seed vinaigrette). Coconut Shrimp Salad and “Seas-er” Salad round off the entrée salads menu, which complements Macky’s Maryland Crab and Cream of Crab soups.
An impressive lunch menu is also available at Macky’s Bayside, with an ample selection of burgers, pizzas, and sandwiches.  A unique pizza on the lunch menu is the Thai-Chili Shrimp, which includes sweet and spicy Thai-chili sauce, poached shrimp, roasted red pepper, diced mango, mozzarella cheese, and fresh cilantro. Fried Rockfish, Chicken Salad, Catch of the Day, and Maryland Style Crab Cake are just a few of many sandwich options. Vegetarians are invited to enjoy the Veggie Wrap and Veggie Burger.
Brandi, Kristi, and I ended our awesome, three-course meal at Macky’s with Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese filling and icing. Despite bikini season, I ate the whole darn thing! All of this brain food gave us fuel for Team Trivia, which takes place every Monday night at Macky’s. We scored third place and won pint glasses, T-shirts, key chains, and a gift certificate.
Family friendly all day long, Macky’s comes alive at night with a full entertainment calendar. Each Friday and Saturday night is a beach bash on the bay with DJ Casper and DJ Cowboy, respectively. Sunday presents a Bloody Mary Bar until 3 p.m., and local band night at 10 p.m. Check out rising star Bryan Russo this Sunday night. Tuesday is Theme Party night with DJ Yummy. Wednesday brings Wii, Guitar Hero, and Corn hole games to Macky’s, and Thursday is Little Black Dress Night. Ladies, put on your black dress and receive half-priced drinks.
We’d like to send out a special thanks to Macky’s manager, Brian Acquavella, who always gives us extra special treatment. Say hello to Brian and the entire gracious staff at Macky’s when you stop in for best bites this week. I’ll see you at sunset at Macky’s, where life is always good.
