The fun-loving staff at Macky’s is like a family, returning year after year.

Private beach? Check. Theme parties? Check. Fresh, innovative seafood recipes? Check. If you’re looking for a bayfront restaurant that is family friendly during the daytime and transforms into a hip hotspot at night, Macky’s Bayside Bar & Grill on 54th Street is your one-stop shop. Palm trees and outdoor seating are aplenty on Macky’s private, sandy beach overlooking Assawoman Bay and a wildlife sanctuary.
My family and I enjoyed a beautiful sunset at Macky’s, where  “God Bless America” streams through the speakers every day when the sun descends on the horizon. Lovely hostess and longtime manager Kristy, who led us to an outdoor table directly on the bayfront, greeted us. Children were catching minnows in small nets available at Macky’s merchandise shop, and flocks of birds were having a feeding frenzy over the bay waters. “The sunset just gets prettier and prettier,” said 12-year-old Nevaeh as she snapped countless photographs.
The Fresh Catches of the Day were Seared Mahi Mahi and Seared Salmon. We asked our server, Mary, which appetizers are the best sellers at Macky’s Bayside. She explained that Jerk Chicken has been a staple on the appetizer menu for years. Marinated and served with honey dijon and orange-cilantro salsa, these jerk chicken breast tenders are so popular that they are featured on the happy hour menu and the lunch and dinner menus too.
Dotsy’s Delight Crab Dip is another crowd-pleasing appetizer. New on the appetizer menu this year is Clams Casino. We ordered both appetizers to kick off our meal. A special blend of crab and cream cheese in a toasty sourdough bread bowl with stone-wheat crackers, the Dotsy’s Delight Crab Dip is so good. Clams Casino is comprised of six middle neck clams with bacon, red pepper, celery, onion, garlic, and mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Baked golden brown, this new dish melts in your mouth.
For our dinner entrée, our knowledgeable server, Mary, recommended the Andouille Encrusted Grouper—grouper filet encrusted with andouille sausage, pan seared, and topped with gulf shrimp and a Creole cream sauce with seasonal vegetables and rice pilaf. For pasta lovers like me, she also suggested the Lobster Mack and Cheese. We ordered this dish, and were blown away by the four-ounce lobster tail garnished with Parmesan crust, which tops this huge portion of macaroni blended with a sherry, cheddar, and Gouda cheese sauce. This entrée-size dish is definitely not a side dish.
We also ordered the Fresh Catch of the Day—Seared Mahi Mahi, which was doused with a delectable, spicy and tangy mustard. Extra meaty and served with two sides, this entrée was large enough to share with our whole table.
Another entrée that caught our eye was the Three Way Sauté, which is a sizzling blend of jumbo lump crabmeat, gulf shrimp, fresh sea scallops, vine ripe tomatoes, mushrooms, and a light white wine, herb-butter sauce. BBQ Caribbean Shrimp is two skewers of fresh shrimp grilled and glazed with a citrus-chili bbq sauce and mango salsa. Ahi Tuna, Crab Stuffed Shrimp, Maryland Style Crab Cakes, and Fresh Flounder are a few more entrées on the dinner menu at Macky’s Bayside Bar & Grill.
“You can never go wrong with Ribeye,” advised Mary, speaking about the 12-ounce certified Angus beef served blackened or grilled to your liking. Macky’s also presents one of my favorite pasta recipes, Tuscan Chicken. Grilled chicken breast and asparagus tips are sautéed with roasted garlic, sun dried tomatoes, smoked bacon, Parmesan cream, and penne pasta. Crab Alfredo and Garden Vegetable Pasta top off the pasta selections.
Macky’s Bayside serves up a plethora of soups and salads too. Maryland Crab is a rich tomato broth full of vegetables, crabmeat, and flavor. An Eastern Shore delicacy, Cream of Crab Soup is rich and creamy, and full of blue claw crabmeat. Try the Market Tomato Salad for thick-sliced fresh local tomatoes and mozzarella cheese mixed with greens and dressed with a lemon vinaigrette, balsamic reduction, basil oil, and crostini. I’m a big fan of the traditional “Sea-Ser” salad, and the Boaters Choice—spring greens, Romaine, apples, toasted pecans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and sweet red onions, and buttermilk ranch.
Perfect for sharing, more appetizers on the menu at Macky’s include Steamed Clams & Shrimp, Blackened Tuna, Hummus Platter, Coconut Shrimp, and Smoked Mahi Dip. Many of these items are available on the Lite Fare menu, in addition to Wings, Buffalo Tenders, and Basket of Sweet Potato Fries.
Macky’s offers an extensive lunch menu, including pizza, burgers, and sandwiches. Try the Fried Rockfish sandwich, which is hand breaded, deep fried, and served on a brioche roll with lettuce, tomato, and Old Bay tarter sauce. South Carolina BBQ is smothered in Voo Doo BBQ sauce and served on a Kaiser roll with broccoli slaw. Macky’s Portabella Sandwich is roasted with sautéed onions, roasted sweet peppers, lettuce, Swiss cheese, and pesto mayo on a sun dried tomato and herb focaccia roll. A local’s favorite, the Fish Tacos are stuffed with Mahi Mahi, cabbage, cheddar-jack cheese, pico de gallo, and avocado-cilantro lime sauce.
Macky’s serves delicious frozen drinks for adults and kids. Happy Hour is every day from 3-6 PM at Macky’s with food and drink discounts. Live entertainment keeps the dance floor jumping on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, enjoy mimosas and Bloody Marys with tropical music from 11 AM until 3 PM, followed by Trivia Sunday Funday. On Tuesday night, Macky’s hosts its legendary theme parties. Last week kicked off theme party season paying homage to Ocean City tourists, and this Tuesday will carry on with “gender bender” attire. Wednesday night presents live bands, and Thursday night is Little Black Dress Night when ladies wearing little black dresses enjoy half-priced drinks and dance to the deejay.
