Each October, Robin Walter Salon & Day Spa in Ocean Pines recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness month with events, raffles, and fundraisers. "Last year, we hosted a 'cut-a-thon' the same weekend that Superstorm Sandy made landfall," said Jane, who welcomes each customer at the front entrance of the spa. Regardless of the impending storm, the outreach from the local community was inspiring. “It was a huge turnout, and the event is always so much fun,” she said.
From now until mid-November, Robin Walter Salon & Day Spa is raffling a gift basket valued at $500. Full of beauty products from the spa, and products and gift cards from neighboring businesses, the gift basket is an excellent holiday treasure. Tickets are only $5 or five for $20. All proceeds go directly to Women Supporting Women, a local, grassroots organization that helps women across the Delmarva Peninsula through their journey with breast cancer.
Robin Walter Salon & Day Spa first became involved with Women Supporting Women in honor of esthetician Kim King’s beloved mother, Christine Whaley, who passed away from cancer. The nonprofit organization’s free program includes wigs, hats, scarves, lift chairs, support groups, and mentoring services for patients and families regarding chemotherapy, radiation, and recurrence. In addition to its ongoing involvement with Women Supporting Women, the upscale spa, which is conveniently open every day, has been a longtime provider of complimentary manicures to critically ill children and their families as part of the Believe in Tomorrow House by the Sea program, which offers pediatric respite housing in Ocean City for families.
The program is dedicated to helping ill children and their families relax and renew their spirits. "It's amazing, heartbreaking, and inspiring," said Linda, an expert nail technician at Robin Walter Salon & Day Spa who gives courtesy manicures to families twice per week. The girls range in age from four years old to teenagers. "It's amazing how aware they are of their diagnosis and treatments," said Linda. She recalls one little girl, Penelope, who penned a 'thank you' note card to Linda. "You think you're a strong person, and then you meet the mommies," she said.
Making these special children feel beautiful is one small contribution that Robin Walters Salon & Day Spa pays forward. Other local businesses contribute, as well, offering courtesy services and complimentary products. "The involvement from local businesses is phenomenal," said Jane.
Owned by Laurie Heller, Robin Walter Salon & Day Spa is open every day; from 9 AM to 5 PM on Monday, Thursday, and Friday; 9 AM to 7 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday; 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday; and 10 AM to 3 PM on Sunday. You can also walk in for a full spectrum of spa and salon services. I popped into the salon after 5:00 on Tuesday this week, and was treated like royalty. Jane immediately greeted me at the door and told me about the gift basket raffle. Longtime stylist Michelle W. treated me to a complimentary bang trim, which instantly spruced up my look. Then, nail technician Linda gave me a five-star manicure and spa pedicure. I selected a copper shade of polish from more than 100 choices. Linda exfoliated, massaged, and moisturized my hands, and then expertly applied the polish. Then, it was time for me to really relax.
I kicked back in one of the leather full-back chairs in the pedicure room, where I flipped through a magazine while my feet soaked in a whirlpool Jacuzzi of warm, pulsating water. Linda exfoliated and massaged one foot at a time, and applied the polish to my toenails. She did a fabulous job.
As I spent the evening indulging in salon services, I noticed that the staff at Robin Walter Salon & Day Spa is truly an integral part of the community. Each customer was greeted by first name. The professional stylists and nail techs clearly have long-standing friendships with their customers. Conversation throughout the establishment revolved around friends, family, health, beauty, and wellness. It’s a very uplifting, positive ambiance.
