Boy Howdy Music Heads! Now that old man winter has made his appearance, it’s starting to feel like the Holiday Season. After some unseasonably warm December weather, our luck is going cold. Well, we had a good run!
Pompous Pie will play for Buxy’s Salty Dog Customer Appreciation Party Fri., Dec. 17, along with Opposite Directions and 3 Beers Deep.
As always, Christmas means parties and every day over the last couple of weeks, there’s been at least two every night. It’s so hard to keep up. This Friday night on 28th St., it’s a very Buxy Christmas. The Salty Dog is arming itself with Opposite Directions, 3 Beers Deep and Pompous Pie for a night of epic entertainment, food and drink specials and a dose of holiday cheer - less egg more nog! Come out and join us on 12/17 at The Salty Dog and we’ll figure out who’s been naughty (hopefully) or nice.
Thanks to all who participated at the Coconut Times Christmas party at Seacrets’ Marley Hall last week. We had a blast! I was most impressed with John LaMere’s extensive knowledge of Christmas songs; he and the boys banged out a few rarely heard classics like “The Grinch,” “Run Run Rudolph” and the Hawaiian favorite “Mele Keliki Maka is the Thing to Say.” Kudos also to Chris, Joe Smooth, Bobby and Joe Mama for their musical efforts; thanks to the Seacrets staff for taking such good care of us. I’m sure Brenda has some great pics for us all in this issue!
While down in Ft. Lauderdale, Dawn and I ran into longtime Seacrets barkeep Jay Lockett working on the strip at the famous watering hole, Pusser’s. Famous for its signature rum, Pusser’s sells the same spiced rum concocted from the official recipe of the British Royal Navy. Capt. Jon Smith brought this rum to the Caribbean hundreds of years ago and it’s still tasty.
After Ft. Lauderdale, we jumped on a mini cruise ship to the Bahamas. While in Freeport, we witnessed first-hand the devastation brought by hurricane season in the Bahamian Islands. Many of the tree tops were missing, homes and hotels received costly structural damage and the tourist industry was kind of slow. The up side was that we got our peace and quiet in beautiful weather and breathtaking aqua ocean view. Our favorte spot ended up being the Bahamas only Irish Pub, Shenanigan’s. Obviously we were drawn there from the name but this place sells real Irish Guinness, Harp and Bass Ale, not to mention some of the better grub I’ve eaten for a while. On the cruise back from the land of colour, flavour and driving on the left, (gasoline $3.50/gallon), I found myself entering a beer drinking contest on the ship and you’ll never guess who won! Let’s just say O.C. was well represented.
Even though it’s always nice to get away, I still miss this sandbar when I’ve been off of it for a while, weather not withstanding.
A few musical stocking stuffer ideas: The new U2 record is hot! Nirvana Box set with unheard tracks and live DVD just released and The Clash’s London Calling anniversary re-release also featuring DVD and never before heard tunes from this British pop/punk innovation group. This just in, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker are reuniting as ‘Cream’ for an album and tour in ‘05!
Speaking of the New Year, make use of the free buses in Ocean City on N.Y.E., stay safe and have fun. Be sure to check out Pompous Pie again on Jan. 1st at the Greene Turtle West (9pm).
Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season. Till next time, Tah! - Marco Ink
