It truly is always five o’clock somewhere in Ocean City, and there is an elite team of persons dedicated to fueling our thirsty crowds. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you some awesome bartenders who work hard behind our bars to keep you happy with some summery mixes and tasty brews that keep you wanting more!
Happy hour specials run rampant throughout the town, and these smiling men and women have the drinks, conversation, and friendly smile down pat! So if you’re looking for a fun place before dinner or an escape from the sun on those hot beach days, check out these faces at restaurants in the beach area!

Meet Frank
Place of Work: 45th Street Taphouse, Indoor Bar
Number of Years Bartending: 15 years
Time at Taphouse: 1 month (He’s a newbie at Taphouse, but has great experience in the restaurant business - he’s worked practically every job in a restaurant!)
Arrived in OC: 1995 officially, but fell in love with the beach in high school
Suggested Drink: A draft beer, of course! Particularly Flying Dog.
Drink of Choice: Any draft beer will do for Frank.
Words To Live By: It is what it is.
Most Memorable Bar Moment: Over the years, Frank has watched the effects of alcohol in his customers. I know this may sound like it could have a bad ending, but he enjoys when his customers get more relaxed and happier when at his bar after a brew or two.

Meet Joe
Place of Work: Smitty McGee’s Restaurant and Raw Bar
Number of Years Bartending: 14 years
Time at Smitty McGee’s: 5 years
Arrived in Beach Area: 2002 from Montgomery County
Suggested Drink: Rum Punch (Myers dark rum, light rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine)
Drink of Choice: Miller Lite
Personal Quote: “I shoot from the hip, and don’t really listen to myself.”
Most Memorable Bar Moment: When employees leave Smitty’s at the end of the summer, tradition calls for one event in particular on his or her last day. The employee leaving is tied with duck tape to a flagpole right behind Smitty’s on the bay and doused in pickle juice, flour, cherries, salt, and whipped cream. They then leave them tied there - or throw them into the bay!

Meet Allen
Place of Work: Coconuts Bar and Grill
Number of Years Bartending: 22 years
Time at Coconuts: 6 years
Arrived in OC: Grew up here - a real local!
Suggested Drink: Tipsy Turtle (secret recipe of 4 rums and fruit juices- yum!)
Drink of Choice: Beer! Any wheat beer will do for Allen.
Personal Quote: Enjoy life to the fullest.
Most Memorable Bar Moment: As told by Allen: during Bike Week, a woman was at the bar and was ready to pay her check. However, she said the only way the bill would be paid was if I got the money from down in her shirt with my teeth… I got that ten bucks!

Meet Joe
Place of Work: Coconuts Bar and Grill
Number of Years Bartending: 20 years
Time at Coconuts: 7 years
Arrived in OC: 7 years ago from Baltimore
Suggested Drink: Rum Punch (dark rum, light rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and grenadine). I wonder which Joe, Smitty’s Joe or Coconut’s Joe, makes the best Rum Punch? Guess you’ll just have to try them both!
Drink of Choice: Bud Light
Personal Quote: Peace, Smile, Live Life.
Most Memorable Bar Moment: As told by Joe: a woman came up to the bar and ordered a Strawberry Daiquiri. She proceeded to hand it over to her seven year old kid - she didn’t know there was alcohol in it! But don’t worry, I immediately took it back.

Meet Beth
Place of Work: 45th Street Taphouse, Outdoor Bar
Number of Years Bartending: 19 years
Time at Taphouse: Since it opened - March 16
Arrived in OC: 15 years ago from Baltimore
Suggested Drink: Blueberry Lemon Crush (blueberry vodka, triple sec, juice of a whole lemon, sprite)
Drink of Choice: Natural Light or Stoli-O
Personal Quote: Live, Love, Laugh.
Most Memorable Bar Moment: As told by Beth: 14 years ago, I worked at an outdoor pool bar. We had this great group of happy hour customers who were a bit older in age. One day, one of the bartenders started a conga line around the bar and they all joined in. Then he decided to jump in the pool, and believe it or not, they all jumped in after him! It was hilarious!

Meet Mel
Place of Work: High Stakes Bar and Grill
Number of Years Bartending: 25 years
Time at High Stakes: 3 years
Arrived to Beach Area: 25 years ago from Pasadena
Suggested Drink: Orange Crush (vodka, triple sec, fresh orange juice, sprite)
Drink of Choice: Fireball whiskey
Personal Quote: It’s a lot easier to be happy.
Most Memorable Bar Moment: She couldn’t pick just one! Make sure to stop by High Stakes and request to hear one of her many bartending tales!

Besides these hospitable and entertaining men and women, these bars and restaurants all also offer some delicious food and full service bar. Many of these restaurants also have some beautiful views of the bay and ocean, as if these fun bartender facts aren’t enough to get you in the door!
Remember, the key to a happy bartender is politeness and a fair tip, so make sure to take care of this fine team of hydrators so that they can continue serving up mixes, brews, and smiles.
Next time you visit 45th Street Taphouse, Coconuts Beach Bar and Grill, Smitty McGee’s, or High Stakes, say hi to these guys, or better yet, have a drink!
